Gameday Game Recap

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (08/31/08)-- It took Concordia only two games to get in the win column in 2008. After suffering through a tough 2-1 loss in the season opener on Saturday, Concordia used a stingy defense and just enough offense to come away with a 2-0 victory over the University of Mary in Collegeville, Minn. on Sunday.

The Cobbers got a goal in each of the two halves to even their overall at 1-1. The first came from an unlikely source and the second came from one of the Cobber attackers that will be counted on to provide most of the scoring in 2008. Reserve defender PJ Mack came off the bench to notch his first collegiate goal and give Concordia a 1-0 lead at 37:53 of the opening period. Sophomore midfielder Marco Riboli was credited with the only assist on the play.

CC dominated play in the first 45 minutes as they outshot the Marauders 18-4. The second half was less one-sided as the Cobbers posted a 9-6 edge in shots to finish the game with a 27-10 margin in shots.

The Cobbers added a much-needed insurance goal just over the 10-minute mark in the second half. Senior forward Justin Foss picked up his first tally of the year. The play was set up by passes from Brandon Root and Philip Bruckbauer. For Root it was his first point after sitting out the entire 2007 season. Bruckbauer earned his second assist in as many games.

From that point on, Concordia allowed only three more shots on goal. CC keeper Mads Schmidt turned aside all three to pick up his first shutout of the year. For the game, Schmidt stopped eight saves as opposed to Mary goalie Will Corcoran who stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced.

The Cobbers will have their home opener next week when they host UW-Superior on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. The game will be the kickoff to the annual Cobber Invite Tournament.
