Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/24/07)-- All season long the Cobbers have stayed close with MIAC opponents only to fall down the stretch. On Wednesday Concordia turned the tables, as they scored a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes of play and shutout Bethel 2-0. The win is the second conference victory of the year which is the most since the 2003 season.
The win also snaps the Cobbers' five-game losing streak. Concordia is now 2-7-0 in league play and 3-12-1 overall. The Royals remain winless in their last eight games and they continue to search for the first conference victory of the season. Bethel is now 3-14-0 overall and 0-9-0 in the MIAC.
The two teams were virtually even throughout the first 45 minutes of the game. Both teams had five overall shots in the first half as the play was kept mostly between the two penalty areas.
That changed in the second half when Concordia started to connect on passes and stopped trying to play the ball past the Bethel back line. The Cobbers outshot BU 17-3 in the second half and were able to gain control of the central part of the midfield.
It looked as if the game might be headed for overtime as Concordia was never able to connect on any of their scoring chances and the contest ticked under the 14-minute mark. CC finally got on the board at 78:46 when freshman Marco Riboli headed home the game-winner off of a cross from Mergim Vllahiu. For Riboli it was his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
It didn't take Concordia very long to come up with their second goal of the game. With Bethel pressing to try and get the equalizer, Justin Foss was able to get behind the Royal defense off a perfectly executed pass from Riboli sent him on a breakaway. Foss finished off the scoring play by firing the ball past a diving Bethel goalie. The goal for Foss tied him with Riboli for the team lead in goals with four.
For the game, Concordia outshot Bethel 22-8 overall and held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. CC goalie Mads Schmidt made all three saves to earn his first shutout and first win of the year. The Royals split the keeper duties between Nick Kantor and Kevin Kelly. Kantor made the start and did not have a save in the first half. Kelly came on after the break and made four saves and was handed his fifth loss of the year.
