Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/20/07)-- For the third straight game Concordia battled an MIAC opponent to the wire but, in the end, fell by a single goal. The Cobbers scored first against St. Olaf on Saturday in Moorhead, but then watched as the Oles scored a pair of goals less than four minutes apart in the second half and lost 2-1. The one-goal defeat is the third straight for CC and marks the fifth time in the team's eight conference games they have lost by a single score.
The good news for Concordia in the game is that they were able to score first and then take a lead into the halftime break. Genna Patselov's goal at 7:49 gave the Cobbers an early lead - a lead that would hold up through the break. It marked the first time in conference play that Concordia had led at halftime.
Perhaps the biggest play of the game came minutes after Patselov had scored. With CC pressing and the St. Olaf defense reeling from the goal, Cobber junior Justin Foss found himself behind the Ole defense and pounded a low shot that St. Olaf goalie Kevin Friede was barely able to get a foot on.
Unable to add to their lead in the first half and the first part of the second half, St. Olaf finally broke through on the board when Erik van Mechelen notched his first goal of the year at 71:59. Karl Gleason would follow that goal with one of his own at 75:28. Gleason was able to get the game-winner off of assists from Scott Crider and John Zietlow.
Despite having several chances off of serves onto the box, Concordia was never able to come up with the equalizer. In the end, Concordia held a 15-14 edge in overall shots and a 9-2 margin in shots on goal. Friede finished the game with eight saves, while CC goalie Mads Schmidt did not get a save on a shot but stopped many chances by coming out and cutting down crossing attempts.
Concordia will turn around and play at UW-Whitewater on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. The Cobbers will then return home to finish off 2007 by hosting Bethel on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. and then St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m.
