Gameday Game Recap:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/130/07)-- The good news for the Cobber men's soccer team is that they were able to outshoot Hamline, a team that played in last season's MIAC playoff title game, 19-10. The bad news is that Concordia was unable to score a timely goal and lost 2-1 to the Pipers on Saturday in St. Paul.
It was another step along the way to conference improvement for CC, a road that has seen steady improvement play on the field but slower progress in the win-loss column. The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 2-10-1 and their MIAC mark to 1-6-0. Hamline stays in the hunt for their second straight conference tournament berth as they improve to 4-4-0 in league play and 7-5-0 overall.
Hamline was able to take advantage of their limited chances in the game. Playing a direct style of play with three forwards, the Pipers tried to put pressure on the Cobber backline and create chances off of CC miscues. That tactic paid off with a pair of goals in the latter stages of the opening half.
With the score deadlocked at 0-0, HU struck first when Matt Warhol finished off a pass from Drew Lukas to put the Pipers up 1-0 at 27:01. The game-winning goal came just before the halftime whistle. On another chance created from a long ball played into the Cobber defense, Warhol returned the favor by setting up Lucas at 42:57.
Concordia outshot Hamline 11-7 in the first half. CC continued to try and search for an end result to all their shots but was never able to get back in the game in the first 15 minutes of the second period. That finally changed at 75:37 when Justin Foss scored his third goal of the season on an assist from Matt Klein.
The final 14 minutes of the game was played at a frantic pace with CC trying to get an equalizer and Hamline trying to hold off the Cobber charge. Concordia was never able to find the game-tying goal and had to settle for the one-goal defeat. It was their second straight one-goal loss and fourth in conference play this season. That is contrast to the past two seasons where they had three, one-goal losses combined.
CC goalie Mads Schmidt had five saves in the game - three in the first half and two in the second. Hamline keeper Andrew Clement made eight stops to pick up his sixth win of the season.
Concordia will have a week off before hosting St. Olaf on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
