Gameday Game Recap:
BISMARCK, N.D. (9/18/07)--For the second straight game Concordia conceded two goals in the first 15 minutes of play. However, unlike Saturday, on Tuesday CC buckled down and fought back to tie the game in the 81st minute to come away with a 2-2 double overtime tie at the Univ. of Mary.
The two goals scored break a three-game scoreless streak for CC. The tie also pushes Concordia's overall mark to 1-5-1 on the year.
Against Gustavus the Cobbers allowed goals in the fifth and eighth minutes. Concordia was able to push back the two-goal barrage on Tuesday by giving up goals in the 11th and 15 minutes. The sub-par play for the Cobbers continued until almost the end of the first half. By the time intermission rolled around, CC was down 2-0 and had been outshot 7-4 in overall shots and 4-0 in shots on goal.
Concordia head coach Dan Weiler then earned part of his multi-million dollar salary by making key adjustments and giving CC a much-needed "talking to."
The pep talk worked in the second period as CC turned the tables on Mary, outshooting their opponents 9-5 in the final 45 minutes. They also had a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal in the second half.
Concordia junior Justin Foss got CC to within one goal when he scored his first goal in a Cobber uniform at the 54:42 mark. The goal was made even sweeter due to the fact that Foss transferreed fro the University of Mary last spring. Foss' goal was set up by freshman Marco Riboli who would play an integral part in helping Concordia walk away from the game with a positive result.
Trailing 2-1 with time winding down, Riboli took a pass just inside the top of the box, made a quick feint and then buried the ball into the upper lefthand corner of the net to even the game at 2-2 with 9:17 remaining in regulation.
The score remained tied throughout the final nine minutes of play and then through both overtime periods. In the extra sessions, the Marauders held a slight 4-2 edge in overall shots, however both teams were able to only get two shots on goal in the last 20 minutes.
Cobber goalie Kirby Johnson finished the game with four saves and his counterpart, Kyle Kovack, turned aside three shots in goal for Mary.
Concordia will return to MIAC play when they host Carleton on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. The Knights are currently undefeated in conference action and are 5-1 overall.
