Gameday Gamed Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/08/07)-- For 55 minutes it looked as if Concordia was doomed to suffer through another loss. The Cobbers controlled play over Jamestown and held a decided edge in possession time but found themselves down 1-0 after a goal in the first half. That all changed in the 56th minute when Concordia score their first of three goals in a span of 11 minutes. CC overcame a one-goal deficit to rally and beat the Jimmies 3-1 on Saturday in Moorhead. The win is the first of the year for Concordia and is the first for first-year head coach Dan Weiler.
Chad Morlock, Marco Riboli and Kyle Quimby all tallied goals for the Cobbers in the 11-minute game-changing section of the second half. For the senior Morlock it was his second goal in the first three games after playing his first three seasons without scoring a sinlge goal. For freshmen Riboli and Quimby, it was their first collegiate goals.
Playing in a steady downpour, Concordia controlled the pace of play from the opening whistle. They were able to attack the wings consistently and get off crossing attempts that were played in front of the Jamestown goalmouth. Unfortunately, CC was unable to get on the end of one of the crosses and came away with no goals in the first 45 minutes of play.
To make matters worse, the Cobbers went down a goal in the 20th minute when Jamestown attacker Jason Huber was able to head home a ball from five yards out after a scramble in front of the Concordia goal.
After the break Concordia came out determined to finish off one of the chances. It took 11 minutes before Morlock headed home his second goal of the season off of a cross from Genna Patselov. It was the first of two assists on the day for Patselov.
The second goal for the Cobbers came five minutes later when Riboli finished off a pretty passing play that found Patselov crossing the ball in front to wide open Riboli. The goal at 61:18 gave CC a 2-1 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
The final score came six minutes after the Riboli goal. Awarded a free kick from 45 yards out from goal, Quimby lofted a ball into the Jamestown penalty area. The ball bounced behind the Jimmie defense and skipped past a surprised Jamestown goalkeeper.
The final 23 minutes of the game featured multiple substitutions by the Cobbers and continued solid offensive and defensive play.
For the game, Concordia outshot Jamestown 28-9 and held a 13-6 edge in shots on goal. CC also recorded a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Cobber goalie Kirby Johnson made five saves to earn his first collegiate victory. His best save came in the middle of the second half when he made a diving save to his right to stop a Jamestown dead ball from 25 yards out.
The Cobbers will turn around and host St. Scholastica on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
