Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/28/06)-- For 5:10 in the beginning of the first half against St. John's everything seemed rosy and looked as if the Cobber conference drought would come to an end. Concordia had taken their first lead in conference play at the 13:58 mark of the opening period when junior Brandon Root hammered home a shot from just inside the penalty area.

Unfortunately, that would only last for 5:10 as the Johnnies quickly tied the game en route to a 6-1 MIAC-clinching victory on Saturday in Moorhead.

The loss finishes out Concordia's 2006 season. The Cobbers end the year with a 4-12-1 overall record and a 0-9-1 mark in the MIAC. Concordia has not won a conference game since the 2003 season - a streak that stretches for 32 games. During that time, the Cobbers have compiled a 0-29-3 record against league foes.

The win clinches a share of the MIAC regular season championship for the Johnnies. St. John's shares the title with Gustavus who beat Bethel 5-2 earlier in the day. For the Johnnies, it is their first regular season crown since the 1989 season. SJU is now 13-3-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the MIAC.

The game started as though the Cobbers were the team that was looking to clinch a share of the championship. Concordia began with crisp passes and attacked the St. John's end with a purpose. That offensive pressure nearly created a goal at the 8:05 mark when Root found himself open bu then slammed the ball just wide of the goal. Five minutes later he once again broke free of the Johnnie defense just inside the penalty area but this time he left no doubt as he pounded the ball into the upper part of the net. It was his team-leading eighth goal of the season and third straight season that he has finished the year with eight goals.

The goal merely serves as a wake-up call for SJU as they went on the attack and less than six minutes later tied the game on a goal by Tyler Kodet at 19:08. St. John's then added two more goals in the span of 2:13 and the route was on.

St. John's posted two more goals before the break to push the score to 5-1 which meant the second 45 minutes would only be a formality in crowning SJU as the champion.

In the end, St. John's outshot Concordia 17-10 in overall shots and 8-4 in shots on goal. The Johnnies also enjoyed a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Cobber goalie Mads Schmidt made two saves before he was relieved in favor of Brett Oestreich. St. John's used three goalies in the game with the last being credited with the most saves. Matt Sundberg started the game and made one stop. Sean Hasselstrom came on at the start of the second period and did not make a save in 21:10 of action. Luke Nelson finished the game and collected two saves.
