Game Recap:

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/22/06)-- Even though the outcome wasn't in their favor, Concordia continues to play its best soccer of the season when they step outside the MIAC. The Cobbers used a tough defense to shut down a high-powered Central (Iowa) offense and lost 1-0 in a non-conference game played at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. on Sunday.

The loss is only the second non-league defeat in six games for Concordia. The defeat drops the Cobbers' overall record to 4-10-1, they are now 4-2-0 in non-conference action. The win is the third straight for the Dutch, who defeated St. Thomas by a similar 1-0 score on Saturday, and improves their overall mark to 11-5-2. The shutout is the 12th on the season for Central which improves on their school record total.

The two teams battled for the opening part of the fist half before Central broke on the scoreboard just two minutes before halftime. The game-winning goal came off the head of Clint Schreiber, who also scored the winner against St. Thomas.

From that point on it was a test of Cobber goalie Mads Schmidt and the Concordia defense. They were able to keep the Dutch off the board throughout the entire second half. However, the offense was never able to generate a quality scoring chance and the Cobbers were shut out for the second straight game and the eighth time in the past 11 games.

Central held an edge in all the offensive statistical categories. They outshot the Cobbers 23-14 in overall shots and 12-7 in shots on goal. The Dutch also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Schmidt made 11 saves in goal for Concordia and was impressive throughout the game. His counterpart, Adam Chrestman, was forced to make seven saves to earn his first win of the year.

Concordia will finish the season with a pair of home games. They will host the University of Mary (N.D.) on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. and then square off against league-leading St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. Both games will be held at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
