Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/15/06)-- Concordia scored three times in the first half and continued their winning ways outside the MIAC as they held on to beat Upper Iowa 3-2 on Sunday in Moorhead, Minn.

The victory gives the Cobbers 4-1 record against non-league teams. Overall, Concordia is now 4-8-1 on the season. That win total is more than the previous two years combined. With the loss, the Peacocks drop to 2-10-1 on the season and lose for the fifth time in the past six games.

The game didn't start the way that the Cobbers had planned. In fact, it was almost a carbon copy of their 4-2 loss to Macalester on Saturday. Concordia started the game on attack mode but was never able to finish off several golden chances early in the game. Disaster struck in the 18th minute when Upper Iowa converted on one of their only early chances as Chris Pacheco finished off a cross from Dan Nettleton to give the Peacocks the 1-0 lead.

Concordia finally scored a timely goal when junior Kwaku Opoku hammered home a shot from 16 yards outside the goal after the ball had been cleared after a Cobber corner kick. For Opoku, it broke an eight-game goalless drought and gave his confidence a huge lift.

Opoku struck again 10 minutes later when he tapped in a ball from just outside the goalline after Brandon Root had crossed the ball past the goalkeeper.

Root then added a third Cobber goal when he collected a deflection from 40 yards out and broke free from three defenders, walked the ball around the goalie and slotted home his sixth goal of the year before the defense could recover.

That would be all the scoring Concordia would need in the game but it almost wasn't enough.

With less than six minutes remaining in the game, Upper Iowa was awarded a penalty kick for a foul away from the flow of play. Craig Signorin stepped and converted the spot kick and gave the Peacocks five minutes of hope.

The Cobbers were able to hold onto the lead but only after the Peacocks pushed all 11 men inside the penalty area on a corner kick with under 30 seconds to play.

For the game, Concordia outshot Upper Iowa 24-14 and held a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Peacocks had nine corner kicks to only four for the Cobbers.

Concordia goalie Mads Schmidt made four saves to earn his fourth victory of the season. Peacock keeper Tyler Watkins had nine saves in the losing effort.

Concordia will return to MIAC action when they face Carleton in Northfield, Minn. on Saturday, October 21 at 1 p.m.
