Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/05/06)-- It was just what the doctor ordered. The Cobber men's soccer team had struggled to put together a consistent offensive showing in the past four games and had not found the back of the net for more than one goal in a game since the opening weekend of the season when they came away with two victories.

In one, 90-minute that all changed as the Cobbers scored six goals and recorded 33 shots in an explosive 6-3 win over UW-Superior on Thursday in Moorhead, Minn.

Concordia entered the game having scored five goals in the first 740 minutes of play in the 2006 season, they proceeded to score six in 90 minutes against the Yellowjackets, who had held traditional national power UW-Oshkosh to a single goal. The six goals in a single game is the most since the 2003 when Concordia beat Northland College (Wis.) 6-1. The 33 shots in a game is a season-high and is only two fewer than the past three games combined.

The offensive remedy was not only good for the team but also for several individual Cobber players as well. CC junior forward Brandon Root, who led the Cobbers in scoring in 2003 & 2004, scored the second hat trick of his collegiate career. Root had just one goal to his name entering the game, broke loose in the second half to score two goals - including the game-winner at 52:51.

Root finished the game with seven points, the most by a Cobber player since Dustin Allard pulled off the same feat against UW-Superior in 2001.

Cobber freshman midfielder Lane Muzzana was finally repaid for all his hard work during the first eight games of the season when he netted his first collegiate goal at the 44:22 mark of the first half on a header from a corner kick.

Caleb Husmann started the scoring for Concordia in the opening half. Husmann was able to get behind the Yellowjacket defense on the left wing and knock home a goal at 22:10. The Cobbers cruised through the first half and into the second half when Root notched the fourth goal of the game at 68:11.

10 minutes later, the roof almost collapsed on the Cobbers.

Leading 4-0, CC allowed three goals in a span of 17 minutes that turned a 4-0 romp into a 4-3 "this can't be happening" nail biter.

After forward Gubio Henrique complete his hat trick for the Yellowjackets at 85:06, sophomore midfielder Genna Patselov took a feed from Root 29 seconds later and stopped the oncoming train from crashing into the stunned Cobbers. For Patselov, it was the first goal of his collegiate career and it couldn't have come at a better time.

With the wind taken out of their comeback wings, Superior allowed CC to score the final goal of the game just 39 seconds before the final whistle.

In the end, Concordia had 33 total shots and 17 shots on net. Both totals are season highs. The Cobbers also attempted 11 corner kicks - another season high.

UW-Superior had 13 overall shots in the game and put six on the frame.

Cobber keeper Mads Schmidt made three saves to come away with his third win of the season. He made a couple of key saves on breakaways in the second half to help preserve the lead.

Superior goalie Justin Dittmar made 11 saves in the losing effort.

Concordia will return to MIAC play when they travel to Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. The Cobbers return home on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 1:30 p.m. to face Augsburg.
