Game Rewind:

Match Stats: Final Stats vs. Gustavus

Key Point of the Game: The first 9:10 of the game undid Concordia as they allowed nationally-ranked Gustavus to score a pair of goals and take command of the game. From that point on, CC was able to withstand the Gustavus attack.

The Leader: Concordia freshman goalie Mads Schmidt made six saves in the game and stopped a penalty kick in the second half. He also made a spectacular diving save in the final minutes of the game.

Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (09/16/06)-- It's never a good idea to give up two goals in the first ten minutes of the game, it's even worse when you are playing the No.4-ranked team in the country. That's the scenario that played out for Concordia when they faced Gustavus on Saturday in Moorhead.

The Cobbers conceded a pair of goals in the first 9:10 of the game and lost 3-0 to last year's NCAA runner-up. The Gusties tacked on an insurance goal in the second half to finish the scoring and win their fourth consecutive game. The loss is the third straight for Concordia after starting the season with two victories. Concordia is now 2-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the MIAC, while Gustavus improves to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play.

The Gusties broke on top in the fourth minute when Jeff Johnson was able to redirect a long throw with his head and deflect the ball just barely into the Cobber net.

Gustavus added a second goal just over five minutes later when they were able to break the ball down the left wing and have Mike Butterworth's cross find the waiting foot of Dan Suchy who slammed the ball into the back of the net on a first-time volley.

Concordia's best chance of the game came midway through the opening period when Chad Morlock headed the ball off of a corner kick and beat Gustie goalie Tyler Garry but was cleared off the line by the Gustavus defender who was positioned on the post.

The most excitement for Concordia in the second half came when goalie Mads Schmidt made a tremendous save on a penalty kick at the 56:56 mark.

Johnson, who was denied on the penalty try, scored his second goal of the game at 74:29 on another ball that barely crossed the goal line.

In the end, Gustavus outshot Concordia 21-4 and held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

Garry made one save for the Gusties to pick up his fourth win of the year, while Schmidt stopped six shots in the losing effort.

Concordia will have a week off before playing at St. Olaf on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.
