Moorhead, Minn.-- Concordia sophomore Josh Wahlin made the most out his last-minute tournament opportunity and claimed medalist honors at the Concordia Invitational on Friday at the Meadows Golf Course in Moorhead, Minn.

Bemidji State captured the team title honors. The Beavers had all five players finish in the top 20 and posted a total team score of 305. The University of Manitoba finished second and third. Both the 1st and 2nd teams shot 309.

Wahlin, a last-minute substitute for a player on the third Concordia team, shot a 1-over par 73 to win the first tournament of the year. On a course that was made infinitely more difficult because of howling wind conditions, Wahlin went out in 36 and then turned around and finished with a 37. If the entire scenario wasn’t dramatic enough, Wahlin needed a birdie on his final hole to claim the outright title. Playing the par-three fifth hole, he stuck an iron to within 10 feet and then drained the putt to capture medalist honors.

Concordia’s gold team finished fourth in the 13-team event. The Cobbers beat squads from NCAA Division I NDSU and Division II University of North Dakota. Concordia’s number one team shot a 311, one shot better than UND and four ahead of NDSU.

Cobber junior Josh Jones fired the best round of his collegiate career and finished in a tie for second. His 74 (38-36) was the top score on the gold team for Concordia. Sophomore Drew Dvorak, a 2004 all-conference performer, carded a 75 (39-36) and finished in a tie for fifth.

The Cobber maroon and white team’s finished in a dead heat at 331. Wahlin’s 73 paced the white squad while Travis Olson shot an 80(38-42) to pace the maroon team.

Concordia will return to action when they compete in the Bemidji State Invitational on Sept. 11-12 at the Bemidji Town and Country Club.
