SARTELL, Minn. (9/16/07)-- Concordia senior Drew Dvorak continued his assault on becoming a four-time All-MIAC golfer as he posted a 73 in the final round of the St. John's Invitational and finished in sole possession of second place. Dvorak, who was the top NCAA DIII finisher, was only one stroke behind tournament medalist Theo Frentzos of St. Cloud State.

The runner-up finish for Dvorak is his best in a multi-round tournament since he earned medalist honors at the Carleton Invite in 2005.

As a team the Cobbers finished in ninth place in the 20-team invitational. CC shot identical team rounds of 320 and finished one stroke behind eight-place St. Olaf and only seven shots out of finishing in the top five of the ultra-competitive tournament.

After firing a 76 in the opening round on Saturday, Dvorak came back with a one-over-par 73 on Sunday. That was tied for the best round of the day and helped jump Dvorak from a tie for seventh place all the way up to the second spot. He was able to post all pars and birdies except a double bogey - the lone blemish on his scorecard on Sunday.

Dvorak has now played five rounds in 2007 and has not posted a score above 76. His 74.2 average is currently tops among all golfers in the MIAC this season.

Elsewhere for the Cobbers, junior Ryan Walsh shot 82 on Saturday and then bettered that effort by posting an 80 on Sunday. He finished in a tie for 40th place. Freshman Zack Kappes had consistent rounds of 83 and 82 and ended up in a tie for 55th place.

The biggest piece of news other than Dvorak's runner-up finish was the withdrawl of junior Eric Weiss. Weiss shot a 79 on Saturday and was poised for a top 20 finish, but in Sundays round had a club snap in half when he was trying to get a shot out of a fairway bunker. The club then snapped back at Weiss and ended up making a deep cut on hand that required him to be taken to the hospital to receive stitches.

Concordia will return to action next weekend when they compete at the prestigious Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Collegiate Invite hosted by UW-Eau Claire. The tournament will held at the Eau Claire Country Club and is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 23 and Monday, Sept. 24.
