Meet Recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/01/08)-- A chest cold inhibited top runner Tom Sederquist from running well at the MIAC Cross Country Championship today. Sederquist ran 26:46 to finish 31st after a 48th place finish in 2007.

Overall, the Cobbers improved greatly since the 2007 season, dropping nearly 40 seconds per runner, but ended up with the same result, 11th with 301 points, just three points behind 10th-place St. Mary’s.

“Our guys have worked so hard and made such great progress. To have a couple bumps in the road at an inopportune time was disappointing,” commented Head Coach Garrick Larson. St. Olaf (75 pts) and Hamline (87 pts) upset the favorite St. Thomas (93 pts) to finish 1-2, with 4th place Bethel (96 pts) close behind the top 3 teams.

On the toughest course of the season, Nelson Godbolt finished as the No.2 for the Cobbers with an injury hampering Michael Dunn at No.3, but both finished in the top 100 of nearly 200 runners. Godbolt was 91st in 28:38 and Dunn was 99th in 28:49. “Godbolt looked great today, despite a 10K for military training on Friday, a day the team would normally take off or just run a couple miles. He’s learning how to race at the collegiate level quickly,” said Larson.

Rounding out the top five were Mike Reponen in 29:01 and Adam Fitzgerald in 29:17.

The big surprise of the day was David Haugen who finished in the team’s top seven for the first time in his career. Haugen moved to cross country from soccer for the first time in his life as a freshman at Concordia. “Haugen really surprised me today. I’ve thought it was possible for him to run better, but to outrun our No.7, No.8, and No.9 runners today was a real leap,” commented Larson.

In two weeks the Cobbers travel to Grinnell College in Iowa for the NCAA Central Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Central Region Championship will determine the teams and individuals that advance to the NCAA National Championship at Hanover College, Indiana. “I’m expecting our team to rebound for the Central Regional and beat St. Mary’s, plus several other teams. We are a better team than the outcome showed today,” stated Larson. With two weeks to mend some minor injuries and illnesses, the Cobbers should fare better.
