Meet Recap

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (9/19/08)-- Sophomore, Tom Sederquist used a relentless solid pace to break away and win against NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, and NAIA runners at the Ron Pynn Invite hosted by the University of North Dakota on Friday. Sederquist's time of 25:56 on the flat and fast course is the best 8K time since 2004 when Nick Myran ran a 25:29 at the NCAA Central Region Championship to qualify for nationals. It is also the first non-dual meet victory by a Cobber harrier since 1991 when Jason Trichler won the MIAC Championship.

Overall, the Cobbers finished fourth out of seven teams with 81 points, just eight points behind NCAA Division I University of North Dakota. The University of Manitoba won the meet with 38 points, followed in second by the University of Mary with 56 points.

CC sophomore Michael Dunn continued his ascension in cross country matching teammate Mike Reponen stride for stride until the home stretch where the pair finished 17th and 18th in 28:33 and 28:37 respectively. Reponen's time was almost a minute faster than his 2007 best time - also on the UND course.

"The team ran with patience and intelligence today. It was a warm day and the guys went out under control the first half of the race. You could really see the Cobbers moving up through the pack, especially in the last couple miles," commented Cobber coach Garrick Larson.

"I was really excited for Tom Sederquist and his family today. He ran about a 5:10 (mile) pace steadily through the entire course and finally burned off his last opponent with about 800 meters to go in the race. The cross country win was the first of Tom's career according to his parents. I'm really proud of the hard work Tom did over the summer to get to this point. The fitness he has begun to develop from solid summer running really showed over the final mile of the course when his opponents couldn't hang on to the pace."
