MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/29/07)--Concordia senior offensive tackle Grant Weller (Sauk Centre, Minn.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Second Team it was announced on Thursday. Weller becomes the first Cobber recipient of the prestigious award since Jordan Talge earned the honor in 2004.

Weller is the 16th athlete from Concordia to earn Academic All-American honors as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Weller is majoring in Mathematics and Economics and has a 3.80 grade point average.


The prestigious award is given to players in the College Division of the Academic All-American award. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The Academic All-America program annually honors over 1600 student-athletes who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom.

Weller was a three-year starter on the offensive line. He was the leader of a group that helped Concordia set the school record for most points in a season (416) and touchdowns (58). The Cobber offense is currently ranked seventh in the nation in scoring, 10th in the country in rushing offense and 13th in overall offense. CC scored 50-plus points in a school record four games in 2007 and posted at least 40 points in six games. Weller was named the team Offensive Lineman of the Week twice in 2007.
