MOORHEAD, Minn. (8/24/08)--The Meatloaf song “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” will be the theme for the Concordia wide receivers in 2008. The Cobbers return two out of their three starting wide receivers from last season – a year where all three had at least 20 catches and accounted for 15 of the team's record-setting 58 touchdowns. The wideouts were one of the key reasons the Cobbers were able to set school records in points scored and touchdowns put up on the scoreboard. With teams keying on the vaunted CC running game the Concordia wide receivers faced single coverage most of the time and were able to get open down field on a consistent basis. That, along with the emergence of Jesse Nelson as a top-flight college quarterback, helped the Cobbers finish second in the MIAC in scoring offense and overall offense. Lost to graduation was Riley Sammon who was second on the team in receptions with 26 and averaged 14.4 yards per catch during the season. The two returning starting veterans are Nick Alton and Jake Krause. Alton led the team in receiving in 2007 with 28 catches for 378 yards. He was named to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team last year and enters his senior season with a realistic chance to break the 1,000-yard mark for receiving yards in a career. Krause led the team in receiving touchdowns with seven and also earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. He has the ability to beat defense with speed and has showed his knack for making circus catches look routine. Finding a third receiver will be the key for Horan who still holds most of the Cobber receiving records from his days as a player in the mid 1980’s. Look for seniors Paul Shol and Nick Houkom as well junior Nick Lewis to be in the mix for the all-important third slot. Horan Says: “Last year our wide receivers had a breakout year and now we are veterans this season. We are as deep at wide receiver as I have seen it since I started here. We have upperclassmen that have put in their time and have played a lot.”
