Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/01/08)-- The 2008 Concordia football season is starting to turn into the year of the cat. As in the Cobbers have nine lives and are using every one of them. On Saturday, CC turned the ball over five times and fell 28-25 to St. Olaf in Moorhead. Despite the loss, Concordia still controls the top of the MIAC as every other contender in the league also lost. The Cobbers are now in a four-way tie for first place and can still win the MIAC title and earn a spot in the NCAA playoffs if they beat Carleton and Gustavus to end the regular season - both of those teams are currently tied with Concordia first place.

The Cobbers are now 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC while the Oles snap a four-game losing streak and move to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.

The game started out perfectly for CC as they went on a 10-play, 98-yard drive that last 5:24 and gave them a 7-0 lead with 7:48 to play in the opening quarter. Quarterback Jesse Nelson connected on a 15-yard pass to Jake Krause and Concordia had the early momentum and looked as if they might cruise to a win. Unfortunately those would be the only points CC would score until midway through the quarter and by that time the Oles would have rattled off 14 straight points. From there the teams would trade touchdowns and St. Olaf would walk away with the three-point win.

Concordia outgained St. Olaf 380-282 in total offense but the five turnovers haunted the Cobbers all game long. The final two scoring drives for the Oles came after turnovers and helped St. Olaf get short fields in critical situations. Concordia was also undone by untimely penalties as they were flagged for seven penalties for 56 yards. CC had two TD's called back and both times they would fail to score on the drive.

The Oles were held to only 34 rushing yards but were able to come up with key passing plays throughout the game. Quarterback John Haberman finished the day 16-for-33 for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

Concordia had a balanced offense that produced 183 yards of passing offense and 197 rushing yards. Nelson was 16-for-28 for 183 yards and one score and rushed for 80 yards and another TD. Senior running back Cory Johnson made several extended runs in the first part of the game and finished with a game-high 82 rushing yards on 15 carries. Nick Alton caught eight balls for 92 yards to lead the CC wideouts.

Defensively Concordia was led by linebacking tandem of Brett Abrahamson and Isaac Berling. Both players finished with seven total tackles. Xavier Carroll came up with the lone CC takeaway. He picked off a pass in the third quarter that set up the team's second touchdown.

The Cobbers will keep their title hopes at home when they host Carleton on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
