GAMEDAY RECAP

FARGO, N.D. (11/10/06)-- The Concordia offense took a season of frustrations out on the UM-Morris defense as they scored a season-high 41 points, racked up 427 yards in total offense and came away with a decisive 41-21 victory.

The win caps the Cobbers' season at 4-6 and puts a positive spin on a campaign that struggled to find the end zone throughout the season. The Cougars lose for the first time in eight games, ending a seven-game winning streak that helped Morris capture the UMAC championship. Morris finishes the season with a 7-3 overall record.

Concordia seized control of the game from the very start, scoring points on their first four possessions of the game. The highlight of the game, and possibly the season, came at the end of the first quarter when senior receiver Pete Lien hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Jesse Nelson. It was the first touchdown pass of the season for the Cobbers and gave them a 10-0 lead at the time.

The Cobbers tacked on touchdowns on a Ben Thoreson 6-yard run and a Nelson 39-yard scamper to take a 24-0 lead into the break.

The Cougars' big push came at the start of the second half. After scoring on their opening drive of the half, Morris recovered an onside kick and drove 53 yards to trim the lead to 24-14.

Concordia's offense finally got on the field with 9:05 left in the third quarter and promptly drove 52 yards and put the game back out of reach on a patented Kevin Williamson power touchdown run. For Williamson it was his 11th TD of the season and 28th of his career. His career total is the new program record for rushing touchdowns in a career.

Carl Hauser added his second field goal of the game and then the teams traded scores in the final 8:00 of play to push the final score to 41-21.

Concordia outgained the Cougars 427-191 in the game and held the ball for 34:33.

Cobber sophomore running back Cory Johnson also broke out of a season-long funk. He carried the ball 13 times and rattled off a season-best 166 rushing yards. That is the third largest rushing total in his career. Nelson had his most productive game under-center for Concordia. He ran for 80 yards and threw for another 58.

Defensively, the Cobbers were led by freshman defensive back Andrew Larson who finished the game with nine tackles. Senior linebacker Jeremy Christensen had a season-high eight tackles including 1.0 tackles for a loss. Tyler Ledyard ended his outstanding career by coming away with two sacks. That gave him nine for the season and 18 for his career. That total is the 10th best in school history.
