GAMEDAY RECAP

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/04/06)-- It was a game that Ray Guy, Neil Clabo or Reggie Roby would have loved. Concordia and Gustavus combined to hoist up 15 punts in a contest that featured 116 plays, only 352 yards of total offense and lasted a mere 2 hours and 15 minutes.

In the end, Gustavus' touchdown with 2:05 left in the first quarter proved to be the winning score as the Cobbers fell 7-0 in their final MIAC game of the season. Concordia finishes conference play with a 3-5 record. They also watch their overall mark fall to 3-6. The Gusties win for the third straight game and move to 3-4 in league play and 5-4 overall.

Neither team's offense was able to mount a consistent attack. Gustavus had two plays that went farther than 20 yards, one on the only score of the game, while the Cobbers had only one play that covered more than 20 yards.

Concordia's defense limited the Gustavus offense to 175 yards of total offense on 59 plays (2.97 yds/play). The story was no different on the other side of the ball. The Cobber offense could only muster 177 yards of total offense on 57 total plays (3.10 yds/play).

The longest drive in the game for either team was 50 yards and that ended when Concordia turned the ball over on downs on the Gustavus 20-yard line. The Cobbers did not have a drive last longer than six plays in the second half and had all six possessions in the final two quarters end in Kevin Williamson punts.

The Gusties scoring drive started when Neil Petrash picked off a Jesse Nelson pass and returned it 28 yards down to the Cobber 32-yard line. Gustavus then ran three plays before Jordan Stolp connected with Chad Arlt on a 22-yard TD strike. That would be the longest play of the afternoon for Gustavus as the Cobber defense put the clamps on the strong-armed quarterback.

That would be all the offensive excitement the crowd of 2,141 would get to see for the afternoon. After the first quarter elapsed, the teams could only come up with 226 yards of offense in the final 45 minutes of play. That is an average of just over five yards per minute played for the last three quarters of the game.

Williamson punted the ball eight times and had an impressive 40.5 yards per punt average. he also connected on a 69-yard boomer in the second quarter.

Stolp, who like Williamson, pulls double-duty as the team's punter had seven punts for a 38.9 yards per punt average. His long was 47 yards and he dropped a pair of punts inside the Cobber 20-yard line.

Concordia linebacker Dave Moll had a game-high eight tackles. Brennen Lewis finished with four tackles but had two that were for a loss including one sack.

Gustavus had six players with at least six tackles. Like Moll, Kevin Hegland finished with a game-high eight tackles. Jared Sieling produced one of the two Gustavus interceptions and finished with seven tackles and one sack.

Concordia will finish their season when they host UM-Morris on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Fargodome.
