(10/28/06)-- In a season that hasn't seen many record-breaking performances and has found wins hard to come by, senior fullback Kevin Williamson provided a little bit of both as he sparked Concordia to a 25-20 victory over upstart Carleton in Northfield on Saturday. Williamson powered his way to three of the team's four touchdowns and in the process broke the school's all-time record for rushing TD's in a career. He now has 10 touchdowns on the season and 27 for his career. He surpassed the mark of 25 set by All-Conference quarterback Ryan Hebrink ('04). Williamson can now set his sights on the school's all-time touchdown mark of 33 held by current head coach Terry Horan. Not only has Williamson produced individual results this season but his scoring prowess has had an effect on the team's success. In Concordia's three wins, Williamson has scored eight touchdowns (2.67/game) while in the five defeats; he has only punched in a pair of TD's (0.4/game). The win over the Knights wasn't a one-person affair as the Concordia defense came up with several key stops during the game and held the easily ignited Carleton ground game to 72 yards. Even though Concordia failed to throw for a passing touchdown for the eighth straight game this season, the passing attack showed signs of resurgence as sophomore quarterback Jesse Nelson started to connect on routes farther down the field. He finished the game with 7-for-13 for 92 yards. The 92 yards through the air is the most this season for Nelson. Overall, Concordia racked up 349 total offensive yards - 257 of which came on the ground. Carleton had 319 yards on the day with 247 coming through the passing attack. The Cobbers once again held the advantage in time of possession. Concordia had the ball for 34:20 as opposed to only 25:40 for the Knights. CC has had the better in time of possession in seven of their eight games this year. Offensively, sophomore Cory Johnson had a game-high 83 rushing yards on 14 carries. Nelson finished with 72 yards on 21 carries, while Williamson toted the ball 16 times and gained 66 yards. Defensively, freshman Andrew Larson continues to improve as he becomes more comfortable with the Cobber defensive scheme. He had a team-high 10 tackles and broke up one pass. The Concordia defensive line was able to pressure Carleton quarterback Darren Caspers all game long. The Cobbers finished with five sacks. Tyler Ledyard and Clinton Strother each had two sacks and linebacker Brennen Lewis added another. The Cobbers will finish off the 2006 MIAC season when they host Gustavus on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. at Jake Christiansen Stadium. |
