GAMEDAY RECAP

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/21/06)-- Two big plays doomed the Cobbers against the Tommies on Saturday - one on defense and one on special teams as Concordia fell 21-15 to St. Thomas at Jake Christiansen Stadium in Moorhead, Minn.

The loss is the second straight for Concordia after they had fashioned out a two-game winning streak. It is also their third loss at home this season, the most since the 2001 season when the first year under current head coach Terry Horan. With the loss, the Cobbers fall to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in league play.

The win keeps the Tommies' title hopes alive. They are now 4-1 in the MIAC and will host league-leading St. John's next Saturday. St. Thomas is now 5-2 overall.

The game would not go down in the annals of high-powered offensive football. Neither team was able to gain more than 260 yards on the day as the Cobbers outgained the Tommies 260-242. True to form, 229 of Concordia's 260 total yards came on the ground. St. Thomas broke off most of their yardage through the air as they had 183 passing yards and only 59 rushing yards.

Both teams combined for only 26 first downs in the game which took only 2 hours and 25 minutes to complete. St. Thomas was held to only 10 first downs on the day and Concordia managed to collect 16.

Cobber senior fullback Kevin Williamson and St. Thomas quarterback David Sauer were the bright spots for their teams' offensive crew. Williamson had a game-high 105 rushing yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown. His rushing touchdown in the second quarter pushed his career total to 24, only two shy of breaking the Cobber all-time record for rushing TD's in a career. Sauer was 16-for-31 and threw for 171 yards. His biggest impact came from the two touchdown passes he tossed.

Defensively, Concordia was led by freshman defensive back Andrew Larson and senior Dave Moll. Both players had a team-high six tackles. Larson recovered a fumble late in the game, while Moll had 1.5 tackles for a loss. The Tommies had a pair of players with 10 tackles each. Roger Casey had 10 tackles and forced a fumble and Pat Sommerstad had 10 tackles and recovered a fumble.

Neither team was able to score in the opening quarter. Both teams were content to play hard-nosed, grind-em out football. Even though Concordia fumbled twice on their first four possessions, the Cobber defense withstood the pressure and held the Tommies scoreless. St. Thomas finally got on the board in the second quarter after they were able to march the ball 39 yards on seven plays after a Moen punt return of 19 yards gave the Tommies a short field to start the drive.

St. Thomas opened the scoring on a 19-yard pass from quarterback David Sauer to Ian Lewis at the 13:25 mark of the second quarter. Concordia responded in typical Cobber football fashion as they drove 74 yards in 11 plays for their first touchdown. Williamson powered his way in from 1-yard out to make the score 7-6. Unfortunately, Cobber kicker Carl Hauser missed on the extra point and Concordia trailed 7-6.

The score held at 7-6 at the halftime break and it felt like the next team that would score would be able to seize the momentum and put themselves in position to win. That moment came on a 63-yard punt return from Moen who took the punt, found the coverage to his liking on the left side and bolted up the sideline for the score.

Trailing 14-6, the Cobbers searched for a score to get to within 2-point conversion distance and finally found the answer with 11:20 remaining in the game. After another sustained drive. Nelson scrambled his way into the end zone from 12-yards out to bring Concordia within two at 14-12. The drive covered 68 yards and was 13 plays long.

The key point of the game came on the conversion. Nelson pitched the ball to sophomore running back Cory Johnson who went around left end and waited for his blocking caravan to open a lane. After the Cobbers line wedged a hole in the Tommie defense, Johnson went to turn up the field and stroll into the end zone for the score but unfortunately as he planted his foot to make the cut, it slipped out from under him and the best he could do was stumble to the 1-yard line.

The second "big" play for the Tommies happened on the very next drive. After a Concordia personal foul on the kickoff gave the Tommies the ball at the Cobber 48-yard line, St. Thomas needed only two plays to find another score. This time Sauer hooked up with Ryan Jansen for a 45-yard strike to give the Tommies a 21-12 lead with 10:14 remaining.

Concordia then methodically marched the ball down the field again and looked to be headed for another touchdown but was stifled after getting the ball on the 8-yard line after a 34-yard Williamson run. Stopped three times inside the ten, Concordia elected to kick the field goal to get to within six. Hauser made the 22-yard attempt, his second field goal of the year, and the Cobbers still had life.

St. Thomas took the kickoff and controlled the ball for seven plays and looked as if they would run out the clock. The Cobber defense had one big play of their own as junior Clinton Strother forced running back Jimmy Mullen to turn the ball over and Andrew Larson made the recovery to keep Concordia's hopes alive.

The first play was the final nail in the coffin for the Cobbers. Nelson was sacked for a 13-yard loss and the Cobbers were never able to recover. They ultimately had to turn the ball over to St. Thomas after a fourth-and-25 pass attempt fell incomplete.

Concordia will play at Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. and then return home to host Gustavus on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in the MIAC season finale.
