GAMEDAY RECAP

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/07/06)-- Like a soup or spaghetti sauce that tastes better the longer it simmers, the Concordia defense is slowly melding into a mouth-watering main course.

The Cobber defensive unit completely put the clamps on Hamline on Saturday as they held the Pipers to -5 rushing yards and combined for six sacks in Concordia's 21-3 victory in St. Paul.

The win is the second straight for the Cobbers and brings Concordia's conference record level at 2-2. CC is now   2-3 overall and looking to slowly climb out of the 0-3 hole they dug at the beginning of the year.

Linebacker Brennen Lewis and defensive back Andrew Larson each had a team-high eight tackles in the game. Larson also picked off his first collegiate pass and had one tackle for a loss. Lewis had one of the six sacks for the Cobbers as well.

Junior Adam Peterson was the leader of the CC sack brigade. He had a pair of sacks and finished with five tackles. Clinton Strother, Justin Hensch and Jon Mikkelson also picked up a sack each.

Offensively, Concordia ran its way for 306 yards of total offense. The Cobbers had 17 yards on the ground and came away with 129 yards through the air.

Junior Adam Swingdorf had a game-high 64 rushing yards on five carries for a 12.8 yards per carry average. Eric Rodel led all receivers with four catches for 54 yards.

Concordia's two-headed quarterback tandem of Jesse Nelson and Scott Schumacher once again did well enough to put 20-plus points on the board for the second straight week. Nelson had two rushing TD's and finished with 26 yards on nine carries. He was also 6-for-8 throwing the ball for 79 yards. Second and fourth quarter quarterback Scott Schumacher was 5-for-11 in the passing attack and racked up 50 yards. Neither QB threw an interception as the Cobbers only had two turnovers in the game.

The game started out like it would be a showcase for the offense for the Cobbers' as first and third quarter quarterback Nelson drove the team 80 yards in 11 plays to take a 7-0 lead with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter.

From the onset, the Cobber defense looked like an entirely different unit, harassing the attempted Hamline passing attack and completely nullifying the Piper ground game. In the opening half of play, Concordia held Hamline to -3 rushing yards and 64 total offensive yards on 25 plays. The only score that Hamline had to show on the board was a 29-yard field goal by kicker Kyle Milburn.

After driving for the touchdown in the middle of the first quarter and accumulating 117 total yards in the opening 15 minutes, the Cobber offense slowed in the second quarter and came up with only 29 yards in the second 15 minutes.

The third quarter was all Concordia as they scored touchdowns the first two times they touched the ball. After Larson collected his first collegiate interception on the opening drive of the quarter, Nelson drove the Cobbers 27 yards in eight plays and scampered in for his second score of the game to put CC up 13-3. The ensuing extra point failed and then the Cobber defense once again held Hamline to a "three and out" and took over on their own 33-yard line.

On the second drive of the of the second half, Concordia rattled off five plays that brought the ball down to the Hamline 47-yard line before Swingdorf broke off a 47-yard touchdown run to give CC a 19-3 lead. Electing to go for the two-point conversion, Concordia handed the ball off to Kevin Williamson who powered his way in for the extra point and pushed the margin to 21-3.

The second half was a sweet aroma for the Cobber defense. After producing three sacks in the opening half, Concordia piled on three more in the final two periods. They also held the Pipers to only one first down in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter.

When all was said and done, the Cobber dandy defense had only allowed Hamline two series in the final two quarters where they ran more three plays. The Pipers could only muster two third-down conversions in the final 30 minutes and finished the game 4-of-13 on third down situations.
