GAMEDAY REWIND

Key Drive of the Game: After Concordia scored to cut the lead to 12-7, the Cobber defense held the MSU Moorhead defense to three plays and forced a punt. The Dragon defense then responded with a "three and out" series of their own which was capped by a 39-yard TD run by Enos Gilles that once again established a two-score cushio for MSU M.

The Quote: "It's a tough way to start a season, but my hat goes off to the players and coaches from MSU M. They did a great job on the field and have come a long way." Cobber head coach Terry Horan.
The Leader: MSU Moorhead quarterback Dustin Long went 18-for-23 for 205 passing yards and threw for two TD's. More importantly, he did not throw an interception.

GAMEDAY RECAP

MOORHEAD, Minn. (09/02/06)-- Since 1975 neither Concordia nor MSU Moorhead had ever won four straight games against the other. Thanks to a quick defense and a no-turnover offense that streak remains intact as the Dragons beat Concordia 28-7 in Power Bowl to stop a three-game losing streak at the hands of the Cobbers.

The 21-point margin of defeat is the largest against the Cobbers since the 2002 season when St. John's defeated Concordia 34-9 on Oct. 26.

MSU Moorhead's defense held Concordia's offense to only 114 rushing yards on 46 carries. That total is the lowest for the Cobbers since they rushed for only 96 yards against St. John's last year. Not surprisingly, that game also ended in defeat for the Cobbers. Before that game, you have to go all the way back to the 2002 season when the Cobbers were held to under 114 yards against UW-Stout. And what do you know, they also lost that game.

The Dragons' ability to stop the run in crucial situations forced the Cobbers to throw the ball. Playing in his first game as the team's starting quarterback, senior Eric Rodel went 14-of-21 and threw for 184 yards. The most telling stat was the fact that he threw for three interceptions. The last time a Cobber QB was picked off three times was back in 2002 when Ryan Hebrink connected with five St. John's players in the Cobbers' 34-9 loss.

In the end, the inability to run the ball and the three interceptions spelled doom for the Cobber offense.

Concordia's defense was able to stop the Dragon offense for the majority of the game. At half Concordia had only allowed 64 total yards on 23 plays. In the second half, MSU M was able to find seems in the Cobber defense and rattled off 262 total yards including touchdown strikes of 39 and 19 yards.

In the end, MSU Moorhead gained 326 total yards on offense which included 121 rushing yards and 205 through the air. Concordia was held to 114 yards on the ground and 184 passing yards for a total of 298 yards on offense.

Cory Johnson was the leading runner for the Cobbers. Johnson had 64 yards on 11 carries. Eric Rodel scored the lone Cobber touchdown on a two-yard keeper in the third quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Nick Alton had a solid game, collecting four catches for 72 yards.

Defensively, the Cobbers were led by junior linebacker Brennen Lewis and senior defensive tackle Tyler Ledyard. Lewis had a team-high six tackles and Ledyard had two tackles for a loss and one sack. He has posted three sacks in the past two Power Bowl contests.

Concordia will have a week off before returning to action against Bethel on Sat., Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
