Spanish is the official language of 330 million people in 21 countries. It is the fourth language in the world in number of speakers, second in international communication, and third as the international language of politics, economics and culture.
At Concordia, not only will you learn to speak Spanish, you will live it — in the classroom, in your home and on trips around the world. Concordia is a recognized leader in the development of language and cultural programs that emphasize practical experience. When you graduate from Concordia with a Spanish major, you will have career opportunities in nearly every profession.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

• Students may enhance language skills and earn money by working as a counselor at the acclaimed Concordia Language Villages during summer and school-year programs. Concordia Language Villages offers immersion instruction in 12 world languages to young people ages 7 to 18.
• Casa Hispana enables sophomore, junior and senior Spanish majors to live in the Spanish language apartment building at Concordia’s on-campus International Center. Students speak Spanish in daily living and watch satellite programming from Spanish-speaking countries. Two native assistants from Spanish-speaking countries live in the residence and facilitate language use.

International Opportunities
•Students have an opportunity to study Spanish language, literature, art, music, modern history, government and economics for one or two semesters at the Institutor de Lengua y Cultura Españolas, Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, where all courses are taught in Spanish. Concordia’s comprehensive fee covers total cost, including airfare, tuition and room and board with a Spanish family.
•Business, accounting and economics major who speak Spanish have an opportunity to live, study and work abroad through Concordia’s distinctive International Business Program, which includes a semester at the Universidad de las Américas in Mexico City while working as an intern with a multinational firm.
A May Seminar to Spain, a four-week travel and study abroad seminar that includes homestays with Spanish families, enable students to gather cultural insights and understanding, and improve language fluency.
•Students explore cultural diversity and similarities of at least three Latin American countries during the May Seminar to Latin America.
The Mexico Summer Study Program provides an opportunity to study in a summer school session in Mexico City and enroll in courses taught by Concordia professors. Homestays with families trained as resource persons and guides further improve language fluency, enhancing the summer experience in Mexico’s largest and most diverse city.

Making a Difference for You

Concordia’s Spanish faculty believe attaining a thorough knowledge of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture requires experiences outside the classroom. The Department of Spanish and Hispanic Studies sponsors the following organizations:
• The Sigma Delti Pi Spanish national honor society honors academic excellence and encourages knowledge and interest in Hispanic cultures. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis for summer study in Spain and Mexico. Several recent Concordia students have won these scholarships in national competitions.
•El Círculo is an informal club offering student organized monthly programs that include film presentations, social gatherings and dinners.
•Spanish-language films are shown monthly on campus as part of the Hispanic Film Series.
•Spanish students may perform authentic Spanish plays in the theatre.
