The Russian studies major was established as part of Concordia’s emphasis on international education and in response to a national need for highly trained Russian specialists. The major is designed to educate students in both Russian-area studies and advanced Russian language skills.

Concordia Distinctions
• Russian studies is a multidisciplinary program, drawing from the Departments of French and Russian, History, Religion and English.
• A major and minor are offered in Russian studies and preparation is available to meet requirements for K-12 licensure for teaching in the state of Minnesota. A major in international business is under development.
• Audio, video, interactive computer programs and Internet resources in the highly innovative Multimedia Learning Center assist students in becoming proficient in Russian and enhance their understanding of Russian culture. .
• Concordia’s program requires three years of college-level training in the Russian language. This distinctive feature provides Russian studies graduates with a competitive edge in career opportunities and makes possible an immersion experience in Russia.

Special Programs

• A May Seminar Abroad gives students the opportunity to travel in countries where Russian is frequently spoken, meet the people and experience the political, social and cultural conditions of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
• The Russian Cultural Club sponsors gatherings, film presentations and conversation groups. Topics include cultural awareness, global education, and Russian history, music, art, drama and literature.
• The National Slavic Honor Society granted Concordia a charter in 1990 for the Gamma Phi chapter of Dobro Slovo, which recognizes academic excellence and achievement in the study of Russian language and literature.
• Concordia Language Villages is internationally known for its excellent immersion programs in 12 languages, including Russian, for youth ages 7-18. Concordia language students may participate in the program as counselors and instructors while acquiring valuable language and teacher-preparation skills.
• The Thunderbird-Concordia Linkage Program for international business majors enables Concordia students to make the easiest possible transition into a graduate professional business program, guarantees admission, and satisfies a portion of the M.I.M. degree at the prestigious American Graduate School of International Management in Phoenix.
