Newspaper associations in Minnesota and North Dakota seek reporters and editors with strong liberal arts educations and experience in journalistic writing. Career possibilities for print journalism majors — in newspapers, magazines, book publishing and cyberspace — are predicted to increase through the year 2020.

In response to these needs, Concordia has launched a new program within the English Department to provide a major and minor in print journalism. A liberal arts education is excellent preparation for journalists who must think critically, research and analyze, and present information clearly and in a meaningful context.

At Concordia, students are well-grounded in the basics of writing, reporting and ethics as they prepare to become thoughtful and well-informed professional journalists capable of advancing the college’s mission, “to influence the affairs of the world….”

The Program
• The approach to coursework is practical and oriented toward preparing students to function with excellence in journalism careers.
• The goal of the program is to be specific enough for students to learn real skills, and flexible enough to provide context for those skills through Concordia’s outstanding liberal arts curriculum.
• Staff members of The Forum (Fargo-Moorhead’s daily newspaper) are involved in classroom instruction and interaction. Students are paired with working beat reporters and correspond weekly with them via e-mail to ask specific questions and learn newsgathering techniques.
• Additional informal mentorships evolve as students and working journalists interact in the classroom. Emphasis is placed on gaining “real-world” exposure and experience for students working in partnership with professional journalists.

Concordia Benefits

• Concordia is recognized as having the strongest undergraduate English writing program in the region, with an established network of outreach opportunities and excellent ties with regional media.
• English faculty are active authors, poets, columnists, editors and scholars. Students in the English program at Concordia are exposed to an extraordinary range of writing styles and approaches to writing.
• Our nationally recognized liberal arts curriculum endows students with the ability to think analytically, be adaptive and become effective communicators.
• Concordia’s emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to the curriculum brings students into contact with a rich array of ideas and theories.
• Concordia’s program emphasizes “journalism core values” of reporting, writing, editing and ethics.
