The Physical Education and Health program at Concordia is
in harmony with the liberal arts goals of the college —
to develop our students’ full potentials in mind, body
and spirit. The skills learned in these areas will serve students
well in any career they choose. Physical Education and Health
is dedicated to helping students become skilled professionals
who will exert positive leadership in their fields of work
and be effective participants in their communities.
Concordia offers majors in physical education and health education.
These programs are designed primarily for students who plan
careers as teachers, coaches or youth leaders.
An exercise science major and a nonteaching health major are
also offered for students interested in careers in community
health, health promotion, sports medicine or health clubs.
In conjunction with a major in another academic area, a four-course
sequence enables students to complete a coaching concentration.
Concordia Benefits
• Small classes provide individual attention from expert,
caring faculty experienced in all aspects of health, physical
education and exercise science.
• Concordia has one of the largest physical education
and health programs of all private colleges in Minnesota.
• Concordia is one of only six Minnesota colleges and
universities with a nationally approved health education program.
• Physical education teaching majors learn the rules
and techniques of sports; the methods used in teaching and
coaching; the mechanics of human motion; and the fundamentals
of health, safety and first aid.
• Students have opportunities to make practical use
of the methods and perspectives learned in the classroom by
assisting faculty in teaching general physical education courses,
gaining actual experience in coaching through practicums,
and assisting in intramural sports and intercollegiate athletics.
Concordia Distinctions
• To encourage lifelong fitness and recreation habits,
all Concordia students complete two courses of physical education.
One of these classes is wellness, which helps students understand
the concepts of health-related fitness and its relation to
physical and mental well-being.
• Some 500 students participate in intercollegiate sports
at Concordia, and half of the student body is involved in
intramural sports. Students manage sports teams, officiate
games and assume responsibility for much of the organizational
work in the intramural program.
• An extensive intramural program includes flag football,
volleyball, sand volleyball, basketball, softball, badminton,
golf, tennis, indoor track and field, wallyball, bowling,
swimming, floor hockey and table tennis.
