There are three distinctive majors under the departmental umbrella of Family and Nutrition Sciences. Students may earn a bachelor of arts degree in apparel and design; food/nutrition and dietetics; and child and family studies. Majors in these areas are unique among liberal arts colleges in the region. Study within the department includes individual and family well-being and the fulfilling of basic physical and psychosocial needs and wants.

Concordia Benefits
• Our nationally recognized liberal arts curriculum endows students with the ability to think analytically, be adaptive and become effective communicators.
• Concordia’s emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to the curriculum brings students into contact with a rich array of ideas and theories.
• Small classes and close student/faculty interaction mean many students enter into mentoring relationships with faculty.
• Faculty and students often work together on co-inquiry projects, where they work as a team to research and make campus presentations on issues of local, national or global interest.
• U.S. News & World Report ranks Concordia among the top 160 national liberal arts colleges.
• Of students who start and finish their degrees at Concordia, 88 percent graduate within four years. This enables Concordia students to enter the job market earlier than graduates of many other colleges and universities.
• The department offers three May Seminars Abroad, enabling students to gather a broad view of their major and grasp the sense that individuals can indeed affect global issues. The seminars are Public Health Policy from an International Perspective; Work and Family: A European Experience; and Fashion and Design: The European Influence.
• Students may gain valuable experience at leading local or regional businesses through internships in the Cooperative Education program.

Concordia Distinctions
• Nonteaching minors are offered in three areas: apparel and design, food and nutrition, and child and family studies.
• Through a specific course of study in the department, students may choose a Minnesota licensure option in Family Education/Parent Education through the Board of Teaching of Minnesota.
• The license prepares students for a variety of positions including ECFE teaching and/or administrative positions in local school districts, Head Start programs, early childhood education centers, human service agencies, churches and hospitals.
• All ECFE licenses require a bachelor’s degree, overall grade point average of at least 2.75,
a passing score on the Preprofessional Skills Test (PPST), completion of Education 439 — Human Relations, and specific requirements for each license.

Major in Food/Nutrition and Dietetics

Major in Apparel and Design
• Professional career or graduate school goals are considered when faculty and students plan a series of courses in complementary disciplines such as art, business or communications.
• Many potential career opportunities exist in apparel design, fashion buying, management and merchandising, interior design, or fashion promotion.
• Students may benefit from our linkage with the Fashion Institute of Technology at the State University of New York (SUNY) in New York City, or study programs in other metropolitan areas.
