Environmental Studies at Concordia is a multidisciplinary program seeking to promote and support ecological literacy for all students. Students pursuing either a major or minor will be prepared for graduate study or for employment in government, business and nonprofit organizations. In some cases, students may choose their own course of study to complete a major in the program.

Concordia Benefits
• Concordia is in a strong position to effect changes in personal and social habits regarding the environment.
• Government agencies, businesses and nonprofit organizations are looking to environmental studies graduates to understand the mix of voices and agendas in any environmental debate, and to develop and articulate solutions.
• Environmental Studies is multidisciplinary because it is aimed at basic knowledge of the connected structures and processes of nature and culture.
• The program nourishes the capacity to care about creation, and it provides practical skills to think and act in competent and responsible ways.
• The program is overseen by a special faculty committee drawn from many disciplines within the college.

Concordia Distinctions

• There are two tracks for students interested in majoring in Environmental Studies:
— Track one is for students who wish to major without also majoring in another discipline.
— Track two is for students who wish to pair an Environmental Studies major with a major in another discipline. Students choosing this track may consult with the program chair for approval of a program that includes no fewer than eight and no more than 10 courses.
This track allows for the broadest possible range of study. For example, a biology major may propose significant coursework in English writing. Guidelines for proposing a student-designed major are available from Environmental Studies committee members.
• An Environmental Studies minor is also available.
• Faculty and students work together on co-inquiry projects to research and make campus presentations on issues of local, national and even global importance.
• Environmental Studies is integrated into Concordia’s acclaimed liberal arts curriculum, which emphasizes the ability to think with clarity; to cherish freedom of inquiry; to exercise critical judgment; to understand other cultural backgrounds; and to communicate effectively.
• Small classes and close student-faculty interaction foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
• Concordia’s emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to the curriculum brings students into contact with a rich array of ideas and theories.

Career Opportunities

• Employers today seek graduates with broad liberal arts backgrounds who can make intelligent, analytical judgments; communicate effectively; adapt to change; and who are motivated and trainable in an area of specialization.
• Concordia’s broad preparation is helpful for many careers, including environmental consulting and working for a variety of government agencies.
• Experience gained from work-study, internships and cooperative education programs gives Concordia students a head start in the job market.
