Placement policy: The point where a student should begin the study of a language in college depends on previous experience and level of mastery. See individual world language department sections for specific procedures for placement and alternative ways to satisfy the core distribution world languages requirement.
Multimedia Learning Center: A new multimedia learning center equipped with 20 multimedia computers with connections to the Internet enhances the development of communicative competencies and cultural awareness. Students use interactive CD-ROMs, laser discs, and a variety of software to increase their ability to understand and communicate in a foreign language. In addition, they can use the World Wide Web and other Internet resources to access information from countries where the language they are studying is spoken. Students will also have the opportunity to create their own multimedia projects. The center, located in the Instructional Media Center, also includes a Tandberg audio instruction laboratory and video-viewing stations which receive broadcasts from around the world.

International Center: Three apartment buildings -- French, German and Spanish -- form Concordia's International Center. They provide an environment for absorbing the language and culture of their respective countries. Students may apply to live in the apartments through the respective language departments. Each department has a native assistant, a resident of the house who helps create and maintain an authentic atmosphere in terms of language, lifestyle, food and customs. The center also serves as a meeting place for the language clubs and for departmental activities. SCOLA satellite service is provided at the center. A satellite dish and associated equipment receive and record programs from other countries.

International credit programs: The World Languages departments have programs of study in other countries. Participants in many of the programs live with native families. See the International Education section of the catalog for more information.

International Business: By completing required courses in French, German or Spanish, business and economics majors may have the opportunity to study business in foreign universities and do internships with firms in other countries. See the International Business section of the catalog.

Thunderbird-Concordia Linkage Program: This program provides special opportunities for language majors who wish to pursue graduate studies in international management. See pages 46-47.

May Seminars Abroad: French, German and Spanish students participating in the monthlong travel-study program enhance their language abilities through experiences abroad. French and Spanish 250 and German 322 are the prerequisites for the three seminars. See pages 111-112 for further information on the program, or consult an adviser in the appropriate department for more information on a specific seminar.

Language Villages: Many Concordia language students serve as staff members, both during the school year and in the summer, at the Concordia Language Villages. During the summer the Language Villages program offers 7- to 18-year-olds language study opportunities in Chinese, Danish, Finnish, French, German, Japanese, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. Initiated in 1961, sessions are held at various sites in Minnesota. A permanent village, located near Bemidji, Minnesota, is the site of miniprograms during the school year.
