An Interdisciplinary Program

The social studies teacher preparation program satisfies the "competency-based"social studies curriculum required by the Minnesota Board of Teaching for teaching licensure in social studies. The program is administered by a committee of the department chairs from economics, education, history, political science and sociology. The student should consult the committee member in the appropriate area of concentration.

This program, leading to a major, is designed only for students seeking professional licensure to teach social studies on the junior or senior high school level. The program has two components: (1) background studies preparing the student to teach anthropology, economics, history, geography, political science, psychology and sociology; (2) an area of concentration, which the student elects, for especially strong teaching proficiency in economics, history, political science or sociology. The concentration requirement also provides the student with a strong minor in the chosen discipline.
To be eligible to complete this major, the student must be admitted to the teacher education program as described in the Education section of the catalog. Withdrawal from that program disqualifies the student from completion of this major.
