The Professor Harding C. Noblitt Scholarship

In 1987, during the Faith, Reason, and World Affairs Symposium celebrating the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, a number of Concordia Alumni,  faculty, and staff  organized a committee to establish the Professor Harding C. Noblitt Scholarship.  Among the founding alumni were Drs. James L. Danielson (‘60), Connie Farden Friesen (‘67),  David J. Olson (‘63), Paul E. Peterson (‘62), and Ralph A. Rossum (‘68). The Political Science Department chair, Professor Stuart Ringham, was especially instrumental in organizing the scholarship and subsequent fund drive.

The scholarship fund quickly achieved the level of contribution required to qualify for endowed status, and the first two Noblitt Scholarships were awarded in 1990.  To date, twenty-six Scholarships have been awarded,  averaging approximately $2000 each.  While need is one consideration, the primary criteria for awarding a Noblitt Scholarship are an outstanding academic record, a major in political science or international relations, and the liklihood that the recipient will be a leader of his or her community and profession.  Scholarships are awarded at the end of the junior year.

Harding Coolidge Noblitt

Political scientist, educator and politician, Harding Noblitt was a mentor of students since joining the political science faculty of Concordia College in 1950.   He earned his B.A. degree from Berea College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.  Recipient of every distinguished teacher award Concordia has to offer, Harding Noblitt was also active in city, state and national government and politics.  He was the Democratic candidate for Congress in 1962 and served for years on the Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board.  Professor Noblitt retired in 1990, after forty years (eighty semesters) of continuous and distinguished service to the College.  Harding continues to reside in Moorhead, Minnesota.

While his contributions to his profession and to society have been considerable, he is especially beloved for his great teaching and the influence he has had on the lives of his students and colleagues.  It was in the spirit of this deep appreciation that the alumni and department faculty introduced the Professor Harding C. Noblitt Scholarship.
