Physics is the study of the behavior of the material universe. Physicists attempt to describe the fundamental nature of the universe and how it works, alway searching for the simplest, most comprehensive explanations. Physics explains why the sky is blue, why rainbows have colors, what atoms are made of, how a plane flys, what keeps the moon in orbit and how a pipe organ makes music. The goal of physics is to construct a simple and powerful model of the world around us.

The techniques and facts of physics have broad applications in fields of learning ranging from astronomy to zoology. Employment opportunities for people with degrees in physics are many and varied. Some graduates go directly into engineering positions. Some become science teachers in high schools or junior high schools. Others continue their education in graduate or professional schools becoming college professors, research scientists, lawyers, medical doctors or pastors.
