One of the college’s most distinctive performing groups,
The Concordia College Orchestra is an outstanding 88-member symphony
orchestra that has earned national and international acclaim.
Founded in 1967 by Dr. J. Robert Hanson, the orchestra now performs
under the baton of Bruce Houglum.
In addition to its frequent on-campus performances, The Concordia
College Orchestra embarks on a tour in the United States every
fall and frequently travels abroad. The orchestra is also an integral
part of the Concordia Christmas Concerts, which are eagerly awaited
each year by 20,000 people in Moorhead and Minneapolis and on
nationwide television and radio broadcasts.
The Concordia College Orchestra has earned high praise in music
circles. It has been invited to perform at conventions of the
Music Educators National Conference and played to enthusiastic
audiences at the Minnesota Music Educators Association Midwinter
Clinic and the North Dakota Music Educators Association convention.
The orchestra has been the principal invited orchestra at Kunstfest,
an art and music festival held once every five years in Kassel,
Germany and also has performed at the Prague Spring Festival in
the Czech Republic. In February 2003, the orchestra joined The
Concordia Choir for the première performances of René
Clausen’s composition “MEMORIAL” at the national
convention of the American Choral Directors Association at Lincoln
Center and Riverside Cathedral in New York City. The piece honors
the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
