Concordia has two full jazz ensembles and a Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Any student, regardless of major, is invited to audition for the
groups. Auditions take place at the beginning of the school year.
Rhythm section auditions (piano, guitar, bass, drums) are held during
the first rehearsal (after the horns have already been placed). You can
pick up music for this audition in the music office during the first
week of school.
The bands perform 2 formal concerts each semester. Occasionally, there
are run out concerts, short tours, school concerts, etc. that happen
throughout the semester. The second concert in the Fall has traditional
included the "Concordia Symphonia Orchestra" for a couple "Studio
Orchestra" pieces (jazz ensemble with full symphony orchestra). Jazz I
is also the Friday night show for homecoming weekend. Attendance for
that concert averages around 1,200 Alumni.
Concordia Jazz bands often feature guest artists. A few guests that have dropped by Concordia are: Phil Woods, Dave Weckle, Peter Erskin, Greg Field, Terri Lyne Carrington, ZORO, Ignacio Berroa, and Gregg Bissonette. The jazz ensemble also features local jazz artists. Some of th guests have been: Tom
Strait (trumpet prof. MSUM), Matt Patnode (Sax prof. NDSU), John
Pederson (Trumpet with the Jazz Arts Group of Fargo-Moorhead and local
teacher), Glen Ginn (guitar prof. at MSUM), Michael Missuras (Trumpet
and music industry prof at MSUM), Mary Marshal (jazz piano prof. at
Concordia), Christine Hitt (former Jazz piano and vocal jazz director
at Concorida), David Ferreira (jazz piano prof. at Concordia and jazz
II conductor).
Jazz I recorded their first CD back in 2004. I'll tell you what is available from Concordia Recordings.
The band does recording sessions every year for promotion CDs and
