Director, Healthcare Administration Program
Letter From the Healthcare Administration
Program Director – Fall 2006
Welcome to our web site. Fall of 2006 finds us again
welcoming a new class of students into our programs. Again nearly 30 students have
indicated an early interest in practicum experiences next summer. Much of the
credit for this interest is due to the work of our Student Healthcare Management Association
(SHMA). They are planning a trip to the University of Minnesota in October. This
gives the students the opportunity to become familiar with the school and its graduate
programs as well as the opportunity to visit with fellows from the program.
Again this year SHMA will assist us with the Spring Institute, scheduled for April 12 and 13, 2006 at the
Ramada Plaza Suites in Fargo. This continuing education program has a long
tradition of partnering with the Minnesota and North Dakota chapters of the Healthcare
Financial Management Association (HFMA). The last several years the North Dakota chapter
of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) has also participated. This
institute provides area healthcare managers and executives with access to national level
speakers addressing current issues confronting us today.
In May 2006 Ryn Pitts and I led a group of healthcare management and pre-med majors to Europe. We spent 24
days visiting the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, and Germany studying how they organize
and finance their healthcare delivery systems and the impact that has on access to care, cost
of care, and quality of care. The trip was a great success and our European hosts invited
us back. We plan another trip during May of 2007.
The curriculum of the Healthcare Management major features a core of business courses and a core of healthcare
courses. Students then may select from a variety of other courses to complete their
Healthcare Management major. Certificates in Healthcare Administration, Healthcare
Financial Management or Long-term Care Administration can be earned depending upon the
courses the students elect to take beyond the core courses. We believe the curriculum
serves students by providing them with flexibility in selecting areas of study in which
to focus while providing them with a broad foundation through the core courses.
We enjoy hearing from you and getting input from people. Please feel free to call me at (218) 299-3489 or
email me at branders@cord.edu.
Sincerely, Bruce C. Anderson Director, Healthcare
Administration Program Concordia College

Dan Anderson, PhD.
Director, Long Term Care Administration Program
Greetings from the Long Term Care Administration Program - September 2006
Our most exciting news of the year is the Five-Year NAB Accreditation received by the Program.
The Board of Governors of the National Association of Boards of
Examiners of Long Term Care Administrators formally approved the Accreditation at NAB’s
Annual Meeting on June 9, 2006. Concordia College becomes only the 6th Academic
Program in the nation to receive NAB Accreditation. The Accreditation process and the
list of approved programs are listed on NAB’s website at:
http://nabweb.org/programs/AcademicAccredation.aspx
As of September our Program had not been added to the Website, but please check back,
it will be added soon.
Once again I want to thank our Practicum Preceptors for working with our
students and supporting our Program. Ten students completed their Long Term Care
Practicum this past academic year. The names of the students and preceptors are listed on this
website. If any administrators are interested in hearing more about the Practicum experience,
please contact me.
We are excited about the all the activity in the Healthcare Management
Program. We are in the second year of our revised curriculum which awards a Major in
Healthcare Management. The Major is earned by the completion of one or more of our programs:
Healthcare Administration, Long Term Care Administration, or Healthcare Financial
Management. We continue to be grateful to the many healthcare professionals who lecture to our
classes, sharing their experience and passion for healthcare services. In addition to the
coursework and practicum, the Student Healthcare Management Association (SHMA) is very active
with meetings, field trips, and other extra-curricular educational and social
experiences.
Please review both the Healthcare Management and the SHMA websites for
more information, and feel free to contact me with any questions or comments about our
Program.
