spacer Credo in Crete By Jennith Tarmann '07

The gorgeous countryside near Provarma on Crete prompted me to take many pictures of the snow-capped mountains, the interesting vegetation and the domesticated animals freely roaming the land.

This photo, taken during our walk on our first full day in the area, captures a great majority of the feeling that this region evokes and a wonderful taste of the landscape as well.

I chose to focus this photo on the tree in the center because it seemed like the portrait of new life. The budding of new leaves can be seen on each branch, indicating the start of spring and the beginning of a fresh, new cycle. The tree itself is particularly aesthetically pleasing for me, as it is not perfectly shaped and actually stands at an angle, appearing to lean backwards, gazing at the sky.

The mountain offers a fantastic background, along with an interesting optical duality. While the ground is blooming with signs of spring, the peaks are still covered in winter's hard-packed snow. It appears, from looking at this photograph, that the Earth itself is confused about which season it is.

The branches, though beginning to bloom, are mostly bare, yet small white flowers blanket the ground. The light in this shot was also perfect for my taste. By seeing the light glint off the branches and various plants, it is obvious that the sun is shining, but its light does not overtake the picture.

This allows all the beautiful green and blue hues to become exaggerated, instead of monotonous. Along with forever reminding me of our time in Provarma, this photo is a beautiful depiction of mainland Crete: dramatic and diverse.
