The Spanish Language Village
Concordia Language Villages' mission is to prepare young people for responsible citizenship in our global community.
From a small but inspiring beginning, Concordia Language Villages has become an internationally recognized program on the cutting edge of language education. Much of that growth can be attributed to the vision of our founders and the dream of creating a "mini-world" on the shores of Turtle River Lake.
The Idea: El Lago del Bosque
El Lago del Bosque is Concordia Language Villages
newest permanent village at the Turtle River Lake site outside
of Bemidji, Minnesota. See the plans for El Lago del

An Idea Centered On Young People
Whether eating, singing, playing soccer, creating a craft or conversing
with a native speaker, villagers are constantly surrounded by the
language and culture of the countries they are studying.
At the Spanish Language Village, Jennifer may choose the name "Leticia"
and Jason might become "Juan." This simple bit
of pretending is remarkably effective . . . Jason is too self conscious
to try speaking Spanish but Juan enters into conversations
without embarrassment. Juan has become a villager!
The Concordia Language Villages immersion experience is designed to
instill an appreciation for the language and an understanding of
the culture being studied. At El Lago del Bosque native-speaking
staff members are an important factor in helping villagers understand
the various cultures of the many Spanish-speaking countries.
They come from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican
Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Puerto
Rico, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Villagers in our immersion environment are enthusiastic, and language
learning seems easier because it is being done simultaneously with
other young people their same age.
