Our Mission, Our Heart (About Us)

Read the Grant

To listen. To ask. To Seek. To Experience.   There are many ways to learn and grow.  Our goal, through the Call to Serve Project,  is to share, provide resources, and seek out various ways for people to discover a strong sense of vocation--to put ones' work and ones' life in a bigger picture.

At the heart of this picture is our purpose as a liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America:  "The mission of Concordia College is to influence the affairs of the world by sending into society thoughtful and informed men and women dedicated to the Christian Life."
With this picture in mind, Call to Serve strives to answer questions such as:
  • How does one listen for the voice of vocation?
(Parker Palmer in Let Your Life Speak)

  • What can one find to make a life, and not just a living?
(Peter Gomes in The Good Life)

By participating with students to answer such questions, the overall goal of the Call to Serve Project becomes two-fold.  The first is to encourage Concordia's students in understanding vocation or call in whatever field or career they may choose.  The second gives specific attention to recruitment and preparation of students for vocation in the church, either ordained or lay professional.

Student-centered program activities are central to both emphases.  These programs provide a place for discovery of their own unique gifts and, through experiential learning, exploration of the ways in which they may offer those gifts in service to God and to influence the affairs of the world.

Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota was established in 1891 and has maintained a tradition of viewing education as a means to influence the world in God's behalf.  Vocation, in this contest, celebrates a whole person involvement in society as a means to be co-creator with God in the stewardship of the earth.  Faith and learning are interconnected in all disciplines of study on campus.  The Call to Serve Project seeks to honor and build on this heritage.
