Parliament of World's Religions

Two faculty members from the Department of Religion, Stewart Herman and Larry Alderink, traveled with 14 Concordia students to the Parliament of the World's Religions in Barcelona, Spain, in July of 2004, with sponsorship from the Lilly Call to Serve Project.

Here is what some students had to say about the experience:

"Now is an exciting time in my life. . . . I am currently in a decision-making process regarding my postundergraduate work at Concordia. I believe, as of right now, that seminary seems to be the course of study I am called to pursue. After working at summer camp for the last two summers, and after attending the Parliament of the World's Religions, I feel a strong call to ministry and a driving passion for teaching, experiencing, and sharing the peace and love of God found through worship and social gatherings of the Parliament's magnitude. The experience at the Parliament has given me greater understanding regarding the striving for peace among the world's faithful."

Nathan Clements

"I have always had a passion for people--for talking to, teaching, learning from, and working with people. . . . When I began to lose hope in the goodness of humanity, it was the Parliament that brought that back. I do not feel sure about my career, but I do feel a great degree of reassurance that my vocation will involve working for people's rights. What attending the Parliament of the World's Religions did was bring back to me the hope in humanity that drives me to want to work as a lawyer for social justice and for the dignity of individuals." Nichole Sorenson

"For me, this was an opportunity to put everything I've been studying into some hands-on experience. I could talk to people from different cultures, I could listen to sessions given in Spanish and try to understand them, speak to people in Spanish and see if they could understand me. . . I had the opportunity to talk to people who practiced Wicca, Buddhism, Cao Dai, Sikhism, and Interfaith and find out what was important to them and what challenges they face. It was a rare opportunity to listen to debates about nuclear disarmament, religious violence, and proselytization from points of view that were not my own. It was an experience provided by people that believe in the value of inter-religious dialogue in the search for peace." Julie Robertson
