Vocation Speaker-in-Residence:

Herb Morgenthaler, November 9 - 11

Six years ago Herb retired from the Department Store Division Target Corporation as Director of Partner Business after 36 years of employment. He grew up in New York and came to Minnesota to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, graduating in '61.

After retirement, Herb traveled to Tanzania, East Africa, to visit the Maasai Girls Lutheran Secondary School. It was that visit that began Herb's passion for mission work. Since that first Herb Morgenthaler phototrip he has returned for a second visit which included the Selian Lutheran Hospital.

“I believe that we are all called to serve because at its very roots the nature of the church is to be sent by God in mission to the world. All of the people of God are missionaries sent to be in ministry.  Scripture is quite clear that we are to “Go make disciples of all nations,” to “Witness to the ends of the world,” and care for those who are the least in the world.  Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
He sees volunteer service as a call to both individuals and congregations. It is a way of serving and answering God's call to be sent forth for service to society."

Herb’s volunteer work includes serving as webmaster at his church and also as a member of the board of mission where he coordinates the Habitat for Humanity program. He is board secretary for Plymouth Christian Youth Center, an intercity alternative school with several community outreach programs. Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry is another organization that he serves with; they coordinate global mission projects in India, South America and in Africa. In addition Herb is chair of the Minnesota State Figure Skating Scholarship board. He is also is very much involved with Concordia and handles many of the Twin City activities for the college.
