“Leading Change and Living to Tell About It"
with Anthony B. Robinson
June 24-25 , 2008
What: Ministry that operates only at the transactional level - meeting expressed needs - may fail to touch the deepest needs of congregations and of the people who make them up: the need for transformation, for personal and institutional change in light of the vision and values of the gospel. Clergy who operate only at the transactional level are in danger of allowing the congregation to become an audience or clientele for goods and services. The priesthood of all believers becomes the gathering of religious consumers. The result of transformational leadership is the elevation of aspiration, the conversion of followers into leaders and leaders into moral agents. The apostle Paul, for example, did not hesitate to respond to particular concerns. Yet in doing so he almost always pushed beyond the immediate problems to deeper issues. In this way, Paul responded to felt needs, but he transformed and reframed them as well. The focus of this workshop is to explore such transformational leadership - and survive to tell about it.
Who: Anthony Robinson is a UCC pastor in Seattle whose focus these days is building congregations and communities and stengthening leadership. The author of Tranforming Congregational Culture and Leadership for Vital Congregations, Robinson has served four congregations, both rural and urban, large and small. He has also been active in interfaith dialogue, ministry with persons and families with mental illness, and with low-income housing.

“Theology of the Cross: Uses and Abuses"
with Vitor Westhelle
August 10-14, 2008
What: Historically, the cross is both the most enigmatic and distinctive of the Christian symbols. Slow in its reception within Christian communities, finally, by the fourth century, the Cross won the central position among Christian symbols. Acclaimed and criticized throughout the ages, it has evinced Christian triumphalism but also anchored Christian piety as a source of empathy and solidarity in suffering.
Theology of the Cross - what does it mean? In the Heidelberg disputation, Martin Luther said that "the theologian of the cross calls a thing for what it is." To call a thing for what it is means to speak the truth. It is indeed a risky business and equally perilous is presenting the cross for what it is. There is nothing neat and nice about it. The cross names the world for what it is, a world fraught with suffering and populated by victims. What does it take for us to see the cross in our midst and call it for what it is? Yes, it is indeed risky, but it is also a promise. It is a way of life when lived out in hopeful solidarity of those that are moved by the pain of this world amidst God or those moved by the pain of God in the midst of the world.
Who: Vitor Westhelle has been a professor of systematic theology at the Lutheran School of the Theology at Chicago since 1993. A native of Brazil, he has also taught at the University of Natal and the University of Aarhus in Denmark. Earlier, he was Coordinator of the Ecumenical Commission on Land in Parana, where he was an enabler and a companion with those struggling for land and justice. A prolific writer and editor, he has more than 110 scholarly publications, including his 2006 book, The Scandalous God: The Use and Abuse of the Cross. His is a wide-ranging intellect, including the history of theology, philosophy, science, and the arts.

“Does Just Peacemaking Give a Faithful and Effetive Way to Reduce the threat of Terrorism?"
with Glen Stassen
September 18 , 2008
What: The idea of "just peacemaking" has been set forth as an alternative to just war theory and to pacifism by a 23-member Working Group on Just Peacemaking who were searching for "alternatives to military intervention" and beyond that, the abolition of war.
The group identified a series of peacemaking practices to avoid a war and create justice. As articulated by Glen Stassen, a member of that group, this idea is rooted in the teachings of Jesus, especially the Sermon on the Mount. This is an urgent need for our time, as the wastefulness and ineffectiveness of war become more and more obvious. And it is a task that the church must undertake in a culture deeply committed to violence as a way of dealing with personal as well as international and national problems.
Who: Glen Stassen is a Lewis B. Smedes Professor of Christian Ethics at Fuller Theolotical Seminary in Pasadena, CA. A passionate advocate for peace with jsutice as well as a very active church member (Baptist), Stassen is a prolific author. His books includ Just Peacemaking: Transforming INitiatives for Justive and Peace (Westminster JohnKnox, 1992); Kingdom Ethics: Following Jesus in Contemporary Context (InterVarsity Press, 2003); Just Peacemaking: Ten Practices for Abolishing War, ed. by Stassen (Pilgrim Press, 2004); and Living the Sermon on the Mount: A Practical Hope for Grace and Deliverance (Jossey-Bass, 2006).
Stassen is following in the footsteps of his father, Harold Stassen, apopinted by Pres. Franklin Roosevelt to represent the United States in deliberations leading to the creation of the United Nations. he was elected governor of Minnesota in 1938, 1940, and 1942, and ran for President of the U.S. nine times. The elder Stassen was an active church member, and as president of the American Baptist Church joined Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington.
