Concordia Benefits from Internet Search Engine
While you may not be able to give money to as many charities and schools as you want, you can give charitably just by using a specific Internet search engine. GoodSearch donates 50 percent of its revenue, which comes from advertisers on their site www.GoodSearch.com, to charities and schools. You designate the school or charity of your choice when you use the site. Concordia was recently added to their list of schools and charities, which total more than 37,000.
The site is powered by Yahoo! and was launched in 2005 by Ken Ramberg, the founder of JOBTRAK, now a division of Monster.com, and J.J. Ramberg, an MSNBC anchor. Most schools and charities earn about a penny each time a person uses GoodSearch.
Gooseberry Celebrates 25 Years with Premiere of "Hood: The Musical"
The Gooseberry Park Players, a summer theatre group for youth that takes place at Concordia's Frances Frazier Comstock Theatre, is celebrating 25 years with a new twist on Robin Hood. The Gooseberry Park Players will premiere "Hood: the Musical - The New Legend of Robin Hood" July 17-22. "Hood" is a modern rock musical with 52 performers and 12 technical students. The Gooseberry Park Players had 125 youth ages 11 to 18 audition to be a performer or technician.
Managing artistic director Jim Cermak says the students will get to work with several people who are theatre professionals including music director Jason Parker, choreographer Matt Gasper and costume designer Rooth Varland.

Concordia Students Win 48 Hour Film Awards
For two days, CSTA instructor Greg Carlson and the 40-some members of team Zirkus Technik were working under the mercy of the clock. The team, which included many Concordia students and faculty, competed in Fargo's second annual48 Hour Film Project May 18-20. Their short sports film, "Fur Love of the Game", took home five awards at the competition including best costume design, best screenplay, best acting ensemble, best acting in a female role, and the prestigious audience award.
The film project gave 13 teams from the area the chance to write, film and edit a 5 to 7 minute film in two days. This is the second year the Fargo Theatre has hosted the event, but the 48 Hour Film competitions have been going on across the country for the past six years.
At the start of the competition, teams drew their genre and immediately began planning. Zirkus Technik member Dave Rannow '08, the post-production supervisor and camera operator, was the first this year to hear the three elements required for their film - a character, prop and line of dialogue.
"When you hear those elements, you start thinking right away ... how are we going to make this work," Rannow said.
The film follows the Furries as they take on campus security in a college Olympics tournament. Trouble occurs when the top Furry player falls in love with a security officer, putting the gold medal in jeopardy.
This year, Carlson's 2006 team collaborated with the Line Benders, another local 2006 team with a strong background in filmmaking. Added to the mix were four Concordia faculty members and four new Concordia students. Kyle Iverson '09, who worked as a production assistant and chief boom operator for the first time this year, found the opportunity to learn the art of filmmaking the most rewarding.
"It's about the learning process for me, how everything is done. From brainstorming to writing to shooting. There is so much that one has to learn," Iverson said.
Through all the time limit stress, team Zirkus Technik came away with the second most prestigious award of the night, the audience, or people's choice, award. For Carlson and the students involved, each competition is about trying something new.
"I've been making movies longer than some of the students have been alive," Carlson said. "But I do this so I can learn something new every time. And I do."
For Andrea Schmidt '08, an actor in the film, it's also about the connections formed with the rest of the cast and crew.
"The bonds I've made are perhaps the most permanent and long lasting. I want to encourage more Concordia students to join for the same experience I've had," Schmidt said.
Rannow agrees.
"I haven't had a bad experience yet. Everything is compressed, but you become a family for two days, he said. Everyone's there to back you up and push you forward.
Students are recruited for the annual project mainly through word of mouth and everyone on campus is welcome to join. Carlson hopes for continued involvement on campus, as well as in the Fargo-Moorhead area.
"The long-term goal is to encourage more participation in Fargo. There's so much talent here," Carlson said. "We may never be the size (in number of teams) that Minneapolis has, but we have the quality to compete with the big cities."
He also wants to thank the Concordia College campus community for their flexibility and help throughout the filmmaking process.
"We appreciate the support Concordia has given us, from a variety of places on campus," Carlson said. "Without their support it would be much harder to achieve the level of quality."
After such a strong interest this year, Carlson is hoping for two or three teams from Concordia to compete next year.
Seniors for a Year – Alumni for Life
The Class of 2007 wants to make sure the Concordia experience is available to students for years to come. That's why they got together to create the Class of 2007 Campaign. It's a great example of how modest gifts, when added together, can make a big difference.
On the eve of graduation, many soon-to-be-alumni made a contribution of $20.07 in honor of someone special who supported their four years at Concordia. Some chose to honor a best friend, parents or grandparents, or a favorite professor. Josh Pederson '07 of Lakeville, MN, echoed the class' sentiments by making his $20.07 gift in honor of his advisor and mentor, communications professor, Hank Tkachuk.
Reflecting after graduation, Josh said, "I chose to give because I valued my Concordia experience. Concordia gave me opportunities that helped me grow and change over the last four years. I thought giving would be a good way to say thanks for a great four years. I wanted to thank Hank Tkachuk because he was my adviser and mentor. I was able to talk to him about a lot of things, some about school and some not. He was a great resource and professor."
The Class of 2007 has set the example for all alumni to honor their favorite professor, mentor, or staff member with a gift to C-400 Annual Giving. Not only has the Class of 2007 joined the family of Concordia alumni, but many are already part of the family of alumni donors. Join them today by making your gift in honor of your favorite professor, or someone else special, at www.cord.edu/give
