![]() College Awards Two Honorary Doctorates at 2007 Commencement Concordia awarded honorary degrees to Greg Mortenson and William Marcil at its Commencement April 29.
Mortenson is the author of "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace … One School at a Time" and spoke at the ceremony. A Montana resident who has spent the last few years building schools for impoverished communities in Pakistan and Afghanistan, he attended Concordia from 1977 to 1979 and credits Concordia for impacting his life. "Three Cups of Tea," co-authored by journalist David Oliver Relin, chronicles Mortenson's journey to promote peace through educating children in some of the most volatile war zones in the world. He has created nearly 60 schools through his nonprofit organization Central Asia Institute. "Three Cups of Tea" was a New York Times bestseller, a 2006 TIME Magazine Asian Book of the Year and a 2006 Pacific Northwest Bookseller's Association Book of the Year. Marcil, a North Dakota native, is chairman and chief executive officer of Forum Communications Co. He graduated from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, in 1959 and joined The Forum's advertising department in 1961. Under his leadership, Forum Communications maintains the identity of an independent, family-owned publishing business, with deep roots in the community and has grown into a multistate, multimedia company. Marcil is a state and national leader serving on many national, state and local boards and committees. He has made a significant impact on North Dakota and the community. The North Dakota Newspaper Association inducted Marcil into the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame. - Back to eNews | |
