![]() Students Attracted to Summer Abroad Programs
Forty-five students have enrolled in Concordia's newest international study option – summer schools abroad. The schools are a one-month, residential program where students will study the topics more in-depth, and in many cases, with students from other universities from this country and abroad. Four programs are being offered this year in Italy, Germany, Norway and Spain. The enrollment for the Spanish language and cultural immersion program in Segovia is the largest. In Urbania, Italy, students will experience total Italian language immersion with the option of participating in vocal music, art or Italian cooking classes (see additional story). In Wittenberg, Germany, the language immersion program will include attending Lutherfest, an annual three-day festival honoring the life of Martin Luther. The Spanish program will emphasize visits to local festivals and museums. The Oslo Summer School is the most diverse, attracting 500 students from 90 countries, where Concordia students have the option of studying in either English or Norwegian. Since 1968, the standard bearer for study abroad at Concordia has been the May Seminar, and this year 111 students will participate in nine programs abroad during the "magic month of May." New seminars include a look at post-apartheid South Africa, an in-depth tour of French-speaking Cameroon in West Africa, and global trade in Ukraine and Russia that is a joint seminar of the business, accounting and economics, and Russian departments. Traditionally popular seminars include Dr. Vince Arnold's "Twin Faces of Fascism" in Italy and Germany (view blog); Dr. Douglas Anderson leading "Mathematics in Another Light" and Dr. Mike Bath traveling in France, Germany and England in "Politics, Power and Policy Challenges." Other seminars are "Education vs. Training" in northern Europe, "Understanding Healthcare" in the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and England, and a promising new concept for the art seminar where Dr. Peter Schultz and students will concentrate their studies in only three "art capitals" through lengthy stays in London, Florence and Paris (view blog). - Back to eNews | |
