College Acknowledged for International Education

Concordia College is one of only five U.S. colleges or universities honored with the Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization by NAFSA: The National Association of International Educators.

"This recognition affirms Concordia's role as a national leader in global education," says President Pamela M. Jolicoeur. "It's another confirmation of our historic and continually evolving efforts to provide our students with a rich global perspective that prepares them for effective service and leadership in the world."

Concordia will be featured in the annual NAFSA report "Internationalizing the Campus 2006: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities." The college will also be recognized at a ceremony during the NAFSA annual conference on May 24 in Montréal, Canada.

Other recipients of the Simon Award are Purdue University, Michigan State University, Arcadia University and Earlham College.

is a leader in sending students abroad as well as bringing students here from other countries. For the past two years, the college has ranked in the top ten among undergraduate institutions for the number of students studying abroad.

During spring break this semester (Feb. 22 to March 3) 85 students  traveled on 10-day Exploration Seminars to Austria, Turkey, Italy, Egypt, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Germany and Hawaii. The seminars are intended to give students a taste of being abroad and encourages them to consider enrolling in a May Seminar Abroad or a semester abroad.

"We believe it is critical that we keep expanding opportunities for our students to engage in the world," says Mark Krejci, dean of the college and vice president for Academic Affairs. "International education experiences have transformative power in shaping students' lives and their sense of purpose in the world."

The award, named for the late Senator Paul Simon of Illinois, recognizes innovative and creative efforts in campus internationalization. Sen. Simon was an advocate for international education throughout his career.

The award, now in only its third year, was established to recognize exemplary programs of campus internationalization. Past winners have included Duke University, Colby College, UCLA and Colgate.

"This is a worthy recognition of the quality programs we have developed at Concordia," adds Krejci. "Faculty, administration, staff and student participants have worked together to establish a nationally recognized program on our campus."

Dr. Peter Hovde, former director of International Education, guided the nomination process with the assistance of members of the faculty and staff. Several staff members of the Concordia Language Villages also helped in the nomination process.
