July 2006

Greetings to the Cobbers of the Class of 1996,

Great things are happening at Concordia…exciting things! Construction on the new Campus Center is underway. Dr. Jolicoeur was one of only three college presidents from Minnesota invited to Washington, D.C. to meet with Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In 1996, we graduated with only two international students from the Maasai tribe in Africa. This year, eight Maasai students graduated with the class of 2006! Lastly, this year Concordia also graduated its first Master’s Degree student in Nursing!

Most importantly – this fall we will celebrate our 10-year reunion at Homecoming! Homecoming this year is scheduled for October 13-15, so mark your calendars for this celebration!

In addition to all the exciting Homecoming activities, events for our class include:

  • Friday night: “First Decade Reunion” at the Plains Art Museum in downtown Fargo starting at 9:00 p.m.
  • Saturday morning: Class of 1996 Reunion Breakfast on campus starting at 9:00 a.m. – location still to be determined**
  • Saturday evening: Class of 1996 gathering at the VIP Room in Fargo beginning at 9:00 p.m.**

**Participation in these two events requires pre-registration through the Alumni Office.

If you would still like to be a part of the reunion planning committee, please contact me by mail, email or phone. My contact information is at the end of this letter.

Class Challenge Fund

Thanks to a large number of our classmates, and led by the Reunion Giving Committee, our class contributed $11,876.00 to the campaign this past year! Our class participation went up to 22.3% - from 20.6% last year.

Thank you to those that generously gave back to Concordia!

Each year, I am challenged to find a creative way to encourage you to give back financially to Concordia.  This year I will offer you no gimmicks, clichés nor statistics. I offer you only this story to which you might relate. I was recently made aware that it is very common that alumni start to give financially ten years after graduating. I found this interesting because it was only last year that I started giving myself. The reasons for this are that alumni are typically in more stable careers, are earning more, and are more aware of where their education has taken them 10 years after graduation. This year I simply ask you to consider your situation and where your Concordia education has taken you. Then I ask you to consider giving – even if it is for the first time. The amount of your gift is not important. It is that you give that matters most!

Class Notes

If you have not submitted Class Notes, and you’ve experienced life-changing events, please log on to the Concordia website or send in the Class Notes form from the Concordia Magazine. It’s the first section I turn to when I receive each issue. I am sure that your classmates would love to hear what is happening in your life.

Thoughts

After serving Concordia for many years, Ernie Mancini has announced his retirement. Many of you will recall the energy and enthusiasm Ernie brought to life at Concordia!

You may not be aware that Minnesota has approved, and now has available, Concordia license plates. You can order yours at any Vehicle Licensing Center. The only additional cost for these specialty plates is a yearly $25.00 donation to the Minnesota Scholarship fund!

Remember to attend a Corn Feed in your area this summer.  There are several throughout the country and many throughout the state.

Best wishes to each of you this coming year! I hope to hear from each of you at some time during this next year…be it a phone call, email or an updated Class Notes.

Once again, if you are interested in helping plan our 10-year reunion, please contact me.

***Please note on the inside flap of the Cobber X-tra that all reunion breakfasts are to take place Saturday morning, not Friday morning.
