June 2003
Dear friends and classmates from 1978,
A quarter of a century, a silver anniversary, almost like history (according to my nine-year-old!). Twenty-five years ago we launched from the Concordia campus into our new lives. Empowered with majors, minors, certificates, concentrations, memories, lifetime friendships, and our Cobber rings we entered the big world. Our 25-year reunion celebration will be named A Harvest of Memories for Homecoming 2003 on October 3-5, 2003. Please consider attending some or all of the festivities and renew those lifetime friendships by calling your classmates and encouraging them to meet you there!
The annual Alumni Fund Class Challenge ended in April 2003. We met the challenge of increased participation! That is awesome. There are still 325 of us who could get into the action and make a contribution. The bad news was that, even though participation was up, our giving amount declined some but I prefer to focus on the good news of increased participation. Please consider a gift to Concordia before April 2004 and it is still possible that we could be the first class with 100% participation. Optimism abounds!
Enclosed you will find a special envelope addressed to the 25th Reunion Class Gift. In honor of our 25-year class reunion, please consider a gift to the college. All gifts received between May 1, 2002 and September 1, 2003 will count towards our gift. The total amount will be announced during the Friday night Homecoming Banquet.
You can now be a C-400 Investor by making a gift of $400 during one fiscal year (May 1-April 30). For gifts of $1000, $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 during one fiscal year, you will be a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Investor. A letter and brochure with all the details will be mailed later this summer. If you have questions, please call Mary at the Annual Giving Office, 299-3453 or 800-699-9020.
News notes from 78 grads:
Jim Ostlund, Greg Hruby and Dan Storrusten golfed with "The Duffers" which is group of former athlete buddies who gather annually in Wadena for golf and other "social activities". Not only did these guys golf but along with Dave Brutlag, Randy Hansen and many 76, 77, and 79 Cobber alum athletes, they passed the hat in remembrance of Grak (Dave Grinaker 77) who annually joined them for golf and good times. The money was donated to the Concordia athletic department as a C-400 memorial gift in Graks name. He will be missed at the Duffers event every year and his sudden death reminded all of these guys how special each day with friends and family can be.
Promotions, Achievements and Changes from 78:
Rev. Phil Larson has been hired as the director of chaplaincy services at Bethany Homes in Fargo, North Dakota.
Craig Broman has been hired as President of St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
Carolyn Aarsvold earned her Masters Degree in Education from St. Marys University in Minneapolis, MN.
Wedding Bells for 78:
Sue Langren was married to Michael Reynolds on August 5, 2002. She is Assistant to the President of Manhattanville College.
As you consider your participation in the Annual Alumni Class Challenge and our goal (well maybe my pipe dream goal) of 100% participation also consider sending in some news from your life to include in the annual letter. As long as you have read this far, here is my news from the year, I retired from teaching and I really enjoy substitute teaching, having time to follow my teenagers in their many activities, time to spend with my nine-year-old son, my Weimaraners and last, but not least, my husband. I haven't done any of the things I thought I'd do when I retired (like get in better shape, clean more often, catch up on scrapbooks and photo albums, etc.) but someday I'll do all those things too, maybe....
Make plans for Homecoming today!
Already looking forward to seeing you at the 25th reunion Homecoming events,
Mary (Henkes) Freeman
