July 2006

Dear 1976 Classmates,

Remember the bone-chilling cold of Concordia in winter? Earlier this week, Moorhead was named “Minnesota’s Hot Spot” when temperatures hit a searing 104 degrees. The heat wave gripping much of the nation as I write this letter has me yearning for winter – or, at least, for fall.

Remember Concordia in October? Sunny sweater weather days. Beautiful starry evenings. Wood smoke scented air. Colorful leaves. Saturday afternoon football. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? I can hardly wait for this October to join the throngs of Cobber alums journeying back to Concordia to renew old acquaintances, relive wonderful memories, and take in the sights and sounds of autumn in the Red River Valley.

I hope you, too, are planning to be part of “Combining the Years” Concordia Homecoming 2006 on October 13-15. A full schedule of events and registration is available at www.ConcordiaCollege.edu/alumni. Be sure to plan on attending our reunion breakfast on Saturday morning when we will catch up in person on 30 years of living. Until then, here are class notes from the past year submitted either online or via the insert in the Concordia magazine.

Jolene Beckman, Moorhead, was named the 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year for West Fargo Schools.

Leland McFadden
, Winnipeg, is president of the Manitoba Dental Association and Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Wendy Poffenberger
, Bavaria, is an algebra coach at Ansbach, Vilseck, Hohenfels, and Wurzburg high schools in Germany. All are Department of Defense Dependents Schools.

Brad Ness
, president of S&S Promotional Group, Inc., Fargo, received the Master of Advertising Specialties designation from the Promotional Products Association International.

You heard recently from Dorothy Frosaker Agather and Deb Chisolm Ruehlman, Reunion Gift Co-Chairs, about our participation in Concordia’s annual giving campaign. I am thankful to Dorothy and Deb for their leadership, and to all of you who were encouraged to “pay it forward,” as Deb said, to ensure that future generations of students have the same opportunities we did at Concordia. Our gifts do matter, this year and every year. And remember, if you know a student looking for an excellent college education and experience, Concordia’s admissions counselors would appreciate hearing from you.

Much has changed in 30 years. Concordia’s table-flat landscape now sports a mini-mountain, and there’s a fountain in Prexy’s Pond. Students cross Eighth Street via a climate-controlled skyway, and a campanile graces the center of the campus. The newest campus residence – “Cobber Condos” – is a hit, and work is progressing nicely on the new Campus Center.

But Concordia’s commitment to providing quality education in a Christian environment hasn’t changed. Some of the “giants” who were influential in our formative years are gone now, most recently Walther Prausnitz and Elinor Torstveit.  But others have stepped forward to further the Concordia vision of preparing young men and women to influence the affairs of the world. Come meet these new leaders. Come “home” to Concordia this October.

***Please note on the inside flap of the Cobber X-tra that all reunion breakfasts are to take place Saturday morning, not Friday morning.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
